Symptoms after a tick bite in dogs

Hello! It was an ordinary summer day, there were no signs of difficulties. But then my neighbor’s daughter arrived on a bicycle and brought milk.

And she immediately complained that her beloved dog had been eating nothing for the second day and did not want to play with her.

We went together to examine her pet. Unfortunately, on the neck of the dog I found a huge tick, which was the cause of the disease. Want to know what symptoms after a tick bite in dogs? How to help your pet as quickly as possible? Then below I will tell you in detail.

A tick in a dog. Treatment, symptoms and first aid

Spring, warned by veterinarians, the beginning of the season of incidence of pyroplasmosis - a deadly disease for dogs transmitted by ixodid ticks.

Currently, the disease is recorded almost throughout Russia, where its main carriers are ticks. The territory of Moscow and the Moscow region is also unsuccessful for pyroplasmosis.

Important!
Owners of animals should take care of prevention, be aware of the signs of the disease and the first measures of help with a tick bite. Although this disease has been well studied and there are highly effective treatments, it often ends fatally, usually because the animal was delivered to the veterinary clinic too late.

The longer the pyroplasmosis lasts, the worse the consequences for the body.

The causative agents of the disease are unicellular parasites of pyroplasm, which enter the body with a tick bite. The parasite is carried by ixodid ticks of the genera Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus.

Dermacentor
Dermacentor
Rhipicephalus
Rhipicephalus

Pyroplasmas are found in the salivary glands of a tick and, when bitten, along with saliva, enter the bloodstream of dogs. In this case, the destruction of red blood cells occurs, a large amount of hemoglobin is released, this leads to the fact that the internal organs of the animal can not cope with such a load.

The consequences of all this are the release of toxic substances (decay products), as a result of which organs such as the spleen, liver, and kidneys suffer. The most serious consequence is hypoxia of the animal’s brain (oxygen starvation).

The disease has a pronounced seasonal-peak nature: the warm season (spring-summer). Peaks in incidence occur in May-June and August-September. However, the disease can occur from April to the end of October.

Usually, ticks attack dogs while walking in places overgrown with shrubs or tall grass. Just attached, it is no larger than a pinhead; pumping blood can reach the size of a large bean.

How to remove?

Be sure to carefully inspect the dog after each walk for ticks, and carefully comb out the hair.If you notice a tick sticking to a dog, in no case do not try to immediately pull it out, since only the body comes off and the head remains and causes inflammation.

For removal, you can use special tools, or drip with any oil, alcohol, gasoline. After a few minutes, he will either fall off by himself or loosen his grip, and then he can be pulled out (preferably with a special tool or tweezers).

Advice!
You can also pull out the insect with a thread, wrapping it around the proboscis of the parasite and pulling the ends of the thread to the sides, unscrew it up. This procedure must be carried out slowly and carefully.

After removing the insect, it is advisable to wash the pet and treat the wound with 5% iodine solution. Not every dog will become infected if it is bitten by a dog tick. But, unfortunately, the tick does not indicate whether they can infect or not.

So, now your main task is to carefully monitor the health of the pet and measure its temperature several times a day. The incubation period lasts 6 to 10 days.

Also, if you pulled out a tick at home, then it should be taken to a laboratory examination to find out if the parasite was a carrier of pyroplasmosis.

The course of the disease is most often acute, but can be chronic, as well as over-acute, when animals die in a matter of days. Therefore, if you detect the first symptoms, you should immediately contact a veterinarian to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment.

Symptoms of pyroplasmosis that you need to pay attention to are:

  • Temperature increase up to 40 - 42 ° С. Normally, it should be 37.5 - 39 ° C, in small breeds up to 39.5.
  • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or visible mucous membranes.
  • Urine acquires a reddish tint (blood impurities).
  • Apathy, weakness and refusal to feed also indicate a possible infection.

These are nonspecific symptoms common to many diseases. If your dog has these symptoms, you must immediately show it to your veterinarian!

How to diagnose a disease?

The diagnosis of pyroplasmosis is made on the basis of clinical signs, anamnesis (detection of sucking pests on the dog’s skin), and epizootological data. Crucial are the results of microscopy of blood smears.

Attention!
But, since the parasite is not present in red blood cells at all stages of the disease, the absence of pyroplasm in the smear does not exclude pyroplasmosis.

In such cases, the diagnosis is based on the course of the animal’s disease, medical history and the results of other laboratory tests (urinalysis, biochemistry, general blood test).

What do we have to do?

Treatment for bites is carried out in two directions:

  1. Destruction of the causative agent of pyroplasmosis
  2. Removing intoxication and maintaining the general condition of the animal

To kill the causative agent of the disease, drugs of the group of organic dyes (berenyl, azidine, verbene) and imidocarb derivatives (Piro-Stop) are used. A common property of these drugs is their toxicity not only in relation to the pathogen, but also to the patient.

Since the drugs do not have a preventive effect, they are used only after diagnosis, under the supervision of a veterinarian!

To remove intoxication and maintain the body, a large number of medicines are used: saline solutions, vitamins, heart preparations, etc. the volume and duration of treatment depends on the condition of the patient. In any case, the recovery period lasts at least one month and requires control analyzes.

Prevention, protective equipment and precautions

Prevention of pyroplasmosis is to prevent attacks on animals, for this they are treated with acaricidal drugs, which are available in the form of collars (Kiltiks, Bolfo, Harz), sprays (Front Line, Defendog, Bars) and drops to the withers (Advantix, Front Line, Harz, Bars, Serko).

These products are distributed over the skin and hair without being absorbed into the blood. Contacting treated hair and skin, it dies. These funds, unfortunately, do not provide 100% protection against parasites, the effectiveness of these drugs depends on how much time has passed since their application.Protective equipment must be used in advance (2-3 days before going to nature or going on vacation).

When purchasing protective equipment in veterinary pharmacies or pet stores, be sure to pay attention to the expiration date, packaging integrity, instructions in Russian. Read the instructions for sure!

It must be remembered that:

  • When using anti-tick drugs, contact allergy is possible.
  • When using the spray, it is necessary to treat not only the body of the animal, but also the paws, and the head, as well as especially carefully the area of the groin, armpits and behind the ears.
  • If the dog has a long coat, then the spray consumption increases up to 2 times.
  • If your dog often bathes (or you wash it), then the frequency of anti-mite treatments should be increased.
  • Packing drops at the withers should strictly correspond to the weight of your pet.

Very often owners contact the veterinary clinic with a request to vaccinate their dogs against pyroplasmosis. Currently, in order to form an immune response in dogs, the Pirodog vaccine is used against the pathogen of babesiosis.

Despite the observance of safety precautions, carefully monitor the dog and regularly inspect it. If signs of the disease occur, consult your veterinarian.

Important!
Remember, self-medication can cause irreparable harm to the health and life of a pet!

If you find such symptoms in a dog - do not experiment! An urgent need to contact a veterinary clinic, if for some reason this is not possible, use the service to call the veterinarian at home.

What are the signs and symptoms after a tick bite in a dog

If a dog was bitten by a tick on the street, then the consequences can be negative, and sometimes, alas, fatal. She faces infection with pyroplasmosis - an infection caused by the simplest genus Piroplasma canis for canine representatives. You can also meet another name for the disease - babesiosis.

These pathogens live in the salivary glands of a tick infected with pyroplasm, and get there when the bloodsucker is fed with the blood of a sick animal. After pyroplasma, parasites are passed on to new generations, so their larvae and nymphs can also cause disease.

Infection with piroplasmosis in dogs leads to high mortality, so it is so important not to miss the characteristic symptoms after a bite so that you can start treating on time and not lose your four-legged friend.

What are the symptoms of pyroplasmosis?

Owners of barking pets, who first encounter a tick attack, do not really understand what symptoms to expect with a tick bite in a dog and what to do in the future.

Indeed, many signs of pyroplasmosis are similar to other canine sores - plague, enteritis, leptospirosis, which are not associated with a tick bite and require a completely different treatment.

Advice!
A particular problem is caused by the frequent fact that the dog was bitten by a tick, but was not found on the body, and the owner may not realize for a long time that the deterioration of his four-legged friend is associated with the tick.

In each dog, infection manifests itself purely individually. The presence of pyroplasm in the blood is more severe:

  • puppies
  • young dogs;
  • chronically sick dogs;
  • thoroughbred dogs.

Therefore, an idea of the picture of the disease and what symptoms clearly indicate it will help in time to begin emergency treatment.

The earliest signs that help alert the owner are a decrease in dog activity. The dog loses its usual playfulness, does not show joy, becomes lethargic, does not ask for a walk, and ceases nonchalantly jumping and running.

The following initial symptoms that make it possible to suspect pyroplasmosis are loss of appetite and refusal not only from food, but also from a previously beloved and desired treat. Food becomes problematic - the dog literally fails to feed. That the dog turns away from the treat is the SOS signal in the first days of infection!

After that, on 3-5 days, more disturbing signs of digestion appear - vomiting, often with mucus, because the dog has remained hungry all this time, and sometimes diarrhea with a characteristic bright yellow or greenish color of the liquid masses. Symptoms of diarrhea are not always observed, the chair may look normal, but the color changes to that indicated.

At the same time, you can already notice that the dog is trying to move less, as if it brings her suffering. Her steps are constrained, she prefers to constantly lie away from her master's eyes and not leave a secluded place. Such symptoms already indicate the progression of the disease.

But the main signs of pyroplasmosis are associated with a change in the color of urine - it darkens noticeably, acquiring similarities to beer or coffee, and may change to a dark brown color. Such symptoms accurately indicate precisely pyroplasmas in the blood that destroy red blood cells, and the need to urgently begin treatment, otherwise irreversible processes can soon destroy the dog.

Attention!
In healthy adult dogs, the picture may be completely asymptomatic when the dog dies suddenly for the owners, without showing any special signs of malaise. But the attentive owner, even with the usual behavior of his dog, will notice a changed suspicious color of urine, and will guess that this is due to the consequences of a tick bite in his dog.

As soon as the urine changed color, at the expense of the pet’s life, if it was not urgent to start treatment, I went for hours! On the fifth day after the onset of the disease, the dog dies! Already at this stage will have to do resuscitation measures.

How a dog becomes infected with pyroplasmosis

Tick on the body of a dog
Tick on the body of a dog

Pyroplasm during its cyclic development have two types of hosts. The first as intermediate are dogs, foxes, wolves, jackals and other canids, and the second as final are ixodid ticks, in the body of which pyroplasmas reproduce and further transform.

Female carriers of the infection transmit it to the laid eggs, from which already infected larvae then emerge. Therefore, both at the larval stage and in the future, such a tick, biting a healthy dog, will infect it with an infection.

Peak outbreaks in dogs coincide with a period of tick activity, which, unlike a threat to humans, is more extended over time. Because the larvae and nymphs practically do not bite a person, but the dog is an affordable victim for them. Just then, the threatening symptoms of a tick bite occur in a dog.

The cases of pyroplasmosis are recorded throughout the entire period of plus temperatures - from the very beginning of spring to the end of autumn, not stopping even in the middle of summer, when it is the larvae and nymphs that begin hunting. However, outbreaks occur traditionally in the middle - the end of spring and at the end of summer - mid-autumn.

The dog, running on the ground covered with vegetation, becomes an easy target for bloodsuckers waiting for the victim. It is enough for them to just catch on the wool, and then calmly under its cover look for a few hours for a convenient place for suction and leisurely saturation, which for females of the parasite can drag on for several days.

Therefore, a pet, even if it is treated with an anti-mite remedy, it is better to do a thorough examination after each walk through the thickets of grass and bushes, probing on the body especially vulnerable and preferred places by bloodsuckers:

  • head and ear area;
  • neck and chest;
  • front and hind legs, groin area.

Unfortunately, not a single one, even the best tool, can completely protect the dog from tick-borne attacks, which is why dog owners should not lose their vigilance in a dangerous season - if treatment is not started in time, the death of the pet is inevitable.

Naturally, not every parasite found on a dog will cause symptoms of pyroplasmosis in a dog after a tick bite, but visually, alas, no one can determine if a tick has become dangerous or sterile.

Therefore, only one fact of the presence of a sucked bloodsucker on a pet must alert the responsible owner, ignoring and frivolity in such cases often leads to the loss of a four-legged friend.

What to do if a tick is detected

After the mite sticking out of the dog’s body during examination, it is better to remove it as soon as possible. The faster the fact of a tick bite in a dog is detected, the more symptoms and treatment will be easier, and the outcome will be more favorable.

Important!
The duration of an infectious tick bite in a dog is of great importance, since the entry of pyroplasmas into the victim's body does not interrupt during the period of feeding the bloodsucker. Accordingly, the earlier this process is stopped, the fewer pathogens of infection will enter the dog’s blood, and the easier and more successful the treatment will be.

Feeling the dog, you need to carefully walk along the folds, the front suspension and the neck, look into the ears, do not forget about the groin.

A sucking tick is probed through the hair, like a hard pea the size of a pea or a small raisin, depending on the size of the portion of blood that the parasite had time to feed.

Having spread the wool in a suspicious place and finding a protruding swollen tick, it is removed. If a veterinarian is available, it is best to do this extraction procedure to a specialist. But since time does not tolerate, in the absence of such an opportunity, you can stretch the parasite on your own.

The best and most convenient way is to remove the tweezers, when the tick is covered with an instrument near the skin, where the proboscis has entered the body, and, turning to either side, the bloodsucker is completely and alive removed with a slight pulling movement.

If there are no tweezers at hand, you can pull out the bloodsucker by hand, wrapped in a napkin or bandage with your fingers. The actions are the same - grab as close to the skin as possible, cranking and removing.

After removing the parasite, the wound on the dog’s skin must be thoroughly disinfected, the tick must be burned, scalded or crushed thoroughly between the layers of paper or tissue, and only then thrown away.

Possible signs of infection from a tick bite in a dog appear only when it is attacked by a tick infected with pyroplasma. Not all of these symptoms will necessarily appear in a bitten dog, even in case of infection. Therefore, it is so important to watch your pet carefully for a week, and in case of the slightest deterioration, run to the veterinarian to begin treatment.

Advice!
Very often there is a picture when the dog was not found any tick, and the dog suddenly becomes ill, and the symptomatology resembles pyroplasmosis.

This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that either when examining the dog, the parasite had not yet had time to suck, but only wandered in the wool in search of a convenient place, or, having satiated, it fell off without being discovered.

Such cases are dangerous because the owners write off the dog’s malaise by accidental poisoning or some other disease, and sometimes they begin independent improper treatment.

The absence of a protruding bloodsucker on the dog’s body makes it difficult to link the symptoms with a tick bite in a dog, which many do not know what to do. The most important thing here is to pay attention to the color of urine! If it has darkened, then there is a pyroplasmosis!

The diagnosis is confirmed by a blood test taken from a dog in a veterinary clinic.

To avoid such blunders, veterinarians advise you to test your pet not only on arrival from a walk, but also after 2 - 3 hours, in order to surely find a sucking parasite.

How is pyroplasmosis treated?

The treatment for an infected dog after a tick bite is based on laboratory data. Blood under a microscope clearly shows the presence of pyroplasmas. The therapy is aimed in a complex to destroy pathogens and cleanse the dog's body of intoxication caused by infection activity.

Treatment is prescribed exclusively by a veterinarian, self-medication is unacceptable and entails negative consequences for the dog. You can often find folk tips on how to treat a dog after a tick bite. Exotic recipes are offered, up to an infusion of vodka.

Attention!
This is absolutely not worth doing! Not only will such folk therapy not help the dog, but it will also miss a precious chance to really cure the pet!

The sooner the pet is treated, the more opportunities the dog has to survive and recover without consequences! A bite of an infectious tick in a dog causes symptoms that require treatment and special nutrition, that is, a complex for caring for a sick animal.

After the dog was bitten by a tick and the pyroplasmosis was detected, it is transferred to a diet and adhere to this regimen until complete recovery.

Nutrition provides an easy diet without heavy animal fats - chicken, beef tenderloin, oatmeal. Food must be freshly prepared, water must be clean, you can drink broth of wild rose without sugar.

The veterinarian, in order not to cook food for the dog each time, can recommend a ready-made purchased food suitable for this period.

A sparing regime applies to walks - training, hunting, competitions and exhibitions are postponed until the veterinarian permits. The burden on the body of a recovering dog should be minimal - a leisurely step, short walks over short distances, restrictions on outdoor games.

The duration of treatment and recovery of the dog depends on the severity of the infection, and can drag on for 1-2 months or longer. To control dogs with severe illness, they will have to donate blood and show the pet to the doctor.

Tick Bite Prevention

To prevent the very possibility of a tick bite in a dog, it is necessary to regularly treat it with anti-mite agents - drops in the withers area, sprays, or wear an acaricidal collar.

Hunting breeds that are more at risk of becoming a victim of tick-borne attacks can be comprehensively processed to increase the guarantee of protection:

  1. drops plus a collar;
  2. drops plus spray;
  3. collar plus spray.

A recent development - tablets inside, which protect the dog from parasite attacks for 3 months, have managed to show themselves well and have been tested by domestic veterinarians.

You can pet for the season to be vaccinated against pyroplasmosis vaccines "Nobivak Piro" or "Pirodog". But they do not guarantee absolute protection due to the weak degree of acquired immunity, but the risk of death is successfully leveled.

The main thing is that if a bloodsucker is found on a pet, remove it immediately and carefully monitor its friend in the coming days to see if there are any signs of an onset disease.

Tick bitten by a dog: symptoms and treatment

Ticks are arachnid bugs, 5-10 mm in size. Ticks live in humid shaded places - on trees, in shrubs, in grass, in meadows and fields. In a word, a tick can lie in wait literally everywhere, including in the city.

Important!
Therefore, each owner needs to know what to do and what independent actions to take in order to minimize danger.

The most dangerous time when ticks are especially active are the periods from late March to May, and from August to September. In hot weather, the activity of ticks decreases, and in winter, parasites go into hibernation and are not dangerous.

What is a tick bite dangerous?

Fortunately, a tick bite for a dog is not dangerous and usually does not pose any health risks, but on one condition - if the tick was noticed and removed on time. Therefore, it makes no sense to take the pet to the veterinarian after each bite.

It is enough to carefully examine the dog after the walk and immediately remove all the stuck parasites. Before sucking, the tick travels through the body of the dog for about five hours, so the time for removal is quite enough. But if, nevertheless, the tick was not immediately noticed and it remained parasitic on the dog's body, then the consequences can be most unpleasant.

After a bite, it may take several weeks, or even months, before the disease that appears makes itself felt. The most dangerous tick-borne disease is pyroplasmosis, which affects the blood organs and red blood cells.

The incubation period is 6-10 days, then the symptoms appear gradually. Timely appeal to the veterinarian guarantees the complete recovery of the animal, untimely treatment quickly leads to the death of the dog.

The second dangerous disease transmitted by ticks is borreliosis, which, unfortunately, is difficult to diagnose. The incubation period can last several months, when the dog will feel fine outwardly, and the owner will most likely have time to forget that his pet was once bitten by a tick.

The main symptoms of this dangerous disease are lethargy, apathy, joint pain, and lameness appears at a later period. Treatment can be effective only at an early stage of the disease. The tick can dig not only into the body of the animal, but also into the ear - to detect such a parasite will be doubly harder.

The first signs of the presence of an ear tick are discharge from the auricle and uneasy scratching of the dog. It will be difficult to remove the ear mite on its own, so you will need to consult a veterinarian. After extraction, the dog is prescribed treatment with antifungal and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Symptoms

The main danger is that it is rather difficult to detect a tick on a dog’s body, especially in long-haired animals. Therefore, during the walk and after it, you must carefully monitor the animal and its behavior.

Attention!
The most vulnerable places where a tick usually bites: head and neck; the auricle and the area behind the ears; groin and elbow area.

Common signs that a dog has been bitten by a tick: the first thing you should pay attention to is the presence of a small wound that remains on the dog’s body at the site of the tick’s ingestion. Anxiety of the animal, scratching and biting the place of absorption - these are the first symptoms of a bite.

If after examination a tubercle is found on the body, this will mean that the tick has completely penetrated under the skin. The tail of the dog is a kind of beacon, which you should always pay attention to. If the tail is inactive during walking, the dog may not feel well.

You should carefully examine the animal for ticks and measure body temperature. An increase in body temperature is also a sign of infection. The normal body temperature for a dog is 38-39 degrees. You should pay attention even to a slight increase.

In some cases, blood in the urine becomes noticeable, yellowness appears in the eye proteins. Loss of appetite, lethargy, apathy, offensive smell from the mouth, fatigue - these are the most common symptoms of infection of an animal after a tick bite.

Sometimes the condition can improve, then worsen again, and such differences can continue for a long period of time. But, in the end, the dog will finally weaken and die without timely assistance.

Usually, the first symptoms become noticeable 7-10 days after the bite, but quite often the disease goes away in an acute form, and then the first signs of infection appear literally every other day. Diseases can go into a chronic form, which greatly complicates the diagnosis.

In the chronic form, it is possible to determine the disease and prescribe effective treatment only after passing the tests.

Usually, the symptoms manifest themselves on an increasing basis, so you should consult a doctor even if the symptoms are mild, as further the animal’s health will only worsen.Timely treatment usually helps the dog recover completely.

How to extract a tick yourself

What to do if your pet is bitten by a tick? The very first thing to do is to immediately remove all insects from the body of the animal. You can remove all the sucked ticks by simply combing the dog, and it is advisable to do this after each walk.

As mentioned above, it takes about 5 hours to suck on a parasite and during this time it can be easily combed out of the dog’s hair with a small comb.

How to extract a tick yourself
How to extract a tick yourself

But if the dog was bitten by a tick and has already managed to get under the skin, then it needs to be removed as soon as possible. A sucking parasite can be recognized by a small seal at the site of the bite. Gloves should be worn, as the insect can be infected with encephalitis, and this is dangerous for humans.

In order for the tick to protrude slightly from under the skin, a little sunflower oil or cologne drips into the bite. This should be done until the tick is stuck out enough so that it can be picked up with tweezers. The body of the tick is clamped with tweezers and slowly, in a circular motion, is pulled out.

Important!
It is impossible to pull the insect out from under the skin sharply, since there is a high probability of rupture, and then part of the insect will remain in the body. After removing the tick, the wound on the dog's body should be treated with any antiseptic. The insect itself is better to burn.

After extraction, the wound should be observed, and if inflammation forms at the extraction site, you should immediately contact your veterinarian. Proper treatment will help to cope with all the unpleasant consequences.

First aid

There are situations when you are far out of town, in a village, and your pet has started to develop adverse symptoms. When the animal refused to drink and eat, try to prevent dehydration. Try to pour 100-150 ml of liquid into your mouth every hour.

If the animal is tormented by vomiting, then it is better to do an enema or subcutaneous injection in the same amount. The body will take the necessary fluid. If the animal is large, and you cannot take it to the clinic for analysis, do it yourself.

Wipe the dog’s ear with alcohol, cut a blood vessel close to the edge with a sharp scalpel, and collect blood on a glass plate. Dry a little, and you can go to the laboratory or veterinary clinic, and let your pet wait.

Three times a day you need to subcutaneously inject 20 ml of glucose, as well as vitamins B6 and B12, in an ampoule once a day. But without antiparasitic drugs, your pet will not recover, and without tests it is very dangerous to administer them.

Only if there is no way to get to the veterinary clinic, where they can do a blood test, and the most appropriate clinical picture is observed (a sharp increase and a subsequent decrease in temperature, dark urine, pale mucous membranes), you can inject Azidine or Veriben on your own. You can enter 1 ml of 7% solution per 20 kg of body weight.

Treat your pet for the effects of a tick bite

As already mentioned, if a dog is bitten by a tick, the consequences can be most severe. Therefore, in the spring-summer period, it is required to pay maximum attention to the four-legged friend. Even the smallest deviation in behavior can be a reason for consultation with a veterinarian.

Pyroplasmosis tests are done quickly and are inexpensive, so even if you are safe, nothing bad will happen. Even if you are sure that the dog was bitten by a tick, how to treat it should be decided by a professional on the basis of ready-made tests.

Advice!
Often in a veterinary clinic they focus on symptoms and prescribe antiparasitic drugs without waiting for the tests to return from the laboratory. It should be insisted that the doctor wait for the confirmation of the diagnosis, especially since today it takes literally a few minutes.

Remember that all modern antiparasitic drugs are very toxic and strike not only the pyroplasm, but also the body of the animal. If you confine yourself to one injection, then the health consequences can be fatal.

Kidneys and liver, gastrointestinal tract suffer, immunity is destroyed. That is why a long rehabilitation is required, and it cannot be neglected.

Rehabilitation therapy

So, the dog was bitten by a tick. Pyroplasmosis was identified and successfully defeated. It would seem what more to wish for. But the dog is still languid, sleeping and does not want to eat. This condition is normal on the first day, but if it does not get better the next day, you should tell your doctor about this.

In any case, within ten days you will need to take her to the veterinarian, inject vitamins, saline solutions, drugs that improve heart function, restore the functions of the liver, gall bladder, and gastrointestinal tract.

It is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of the animal, with the slightest deterioration, you need to undergo a second analysis for pyroplasmosis. Re-infection is possible. Immunity is not formed. Moreover, each subsequent infection will be harder to tolerate than the previous one.

The animal may not survive the third bite. So, the dog was bitten by a tick. Pyroplasmosis was identified and successfully defeated. It would seem what more to wish for. Animal nutrition

Animal nutrition with pyroplasmosis After infection with pyroplasmosis, the consequences can be very dangerous. And if you do not make the right menu at the same time, then in a few months you can lose your favorite, even after his recovery.

Attention!
This is due to the fact that as a result of improper nutrition, the kidneys or liver can fail, and acute pancreatitis can develop.

Proper nutrition is the most important part of therapy, without which all the consequences of an ailment can become the most sad. If your pet is in serious condition, for example, barely standing on its paws and refuses to eat sausages, the veterinarian will prescribe special nutrient droppers.

In this case, you can’t force-feed the dog, for example from a syringe or a spoon. At a time when the body of the animal is very weak, a swallowed portion unfortunately can become a very big load! If your pet’s appetite is at least partially preserved, feed it several times a day in small portions.

Be sure to consult an experienced veterinarian about how to feed a sick dog.

Most often, the diet includes dishes such as: mashed meat; cereals (buckwheat, wheat, rice, chopped); lean meat (turkey, beef, lamb); oil (corn, linseed, olive), as an additive to meat; dry food soaked in boiled water to a state of gruel; canned food mixed with hot water. than to feed the dog. All food must be warm.

Prepared meals for this disease are special diets for very weakened animals that have kidney or liver problems, meat-based (beef, lamb, rabbit, turkey).

Preventative measures

Any disease is easier to prevent than to cure. There are many products on the market today that are designed to prevent tick bites. This is a collar, drops at the withers, spray, powder.Since they do not provide 100% protection against ticks, owners often use several species together.

For example, they put on a collar, supplement its action with drops on the withers, which last for several months, and before each outing, they are additionally treated with a spray.

Important!
This significantly reduces the risk of the disease and is much cheaper than treatment and rehabilitation therapy.

But if the dog was bitten by a tick, the signs will not take long. Do not reassure yourself with the thought that you have completely protected your pet. The faster the correct diagnosis is made, the easier the treatment will be.

How to help the injured pet

The most interesting thing is that before this problem there was somehow no or there weren’t so many ticks, but now there are more and more of these creatures every year. You can often see a poor stray dog with whole mite colonies hanging from its ears. When these creatures are absorbed in blood, they become like ugly earrings that are slow.

But confidently kill our pets. The worst thing about a tick bite is its painlessness and the almost complete absence of symptoms, although in fact they are. So, to begin with, let's look at what symptoms of a tick bite your dog may have.

Tick Bite Symptoms

As we already said, the worst thing in a tick bite is the almost complete absence of symptoms after a tick bite of a dog. Although they really will not be if you notice and remove the tick from your pet in time.

If you did not notice the moment when the tick caught on the animal and he managed to bite the dog or even climbed under the skin, then the symptoms may be like this. The dog may get anxious, it can itch, shake its head in case the tick has got into your pet’s ear and is generally anxious in every way.

In the most extreme stages of mite damage, the dog may even whine and howl, from incessant itching. In addition, after a tick bite, a dog’s body temperature often rises to extremes, but many diseases have this symptom, and sometimes the dog’s appetite disappears, but this is also a symptom of several diseases.

In the most extreme cases of mite lesion, blood appears in the urine. If you notice such symptoms in your pet after a long walk in nature, then you should immediately consult a doctor, otherwise you risk losing your pet.

Sometimes it happens that you notice a tick and remove it in time, but he managed to bite your pet and he has the symptoms listed above. In this case, you should immediately consult a doctor. Self-treatment can only worsen the condition of the dog.

Advice!
A common symptom of a tick bite is general lethargy, the dog does not eat after a tick bite, constantly sleeps, and so on. All this is a direct indication that the dog was attacked by a tick and contracted some kind of disease.

Treating a dog after a tick bite may require a lot of patience and material investment. Therefore, if your pet is bitten by a tick, then you need to be prepared for everything. And do not treat the dog after a tick bite on its own, this can harm your pet.

Where to look?

After a walk in nature in the summer or, let’s say, the warm season of the year, the dog must be carefully examined. Remember that even if you treat the dog with special sprays or drops, these products do not provide complete protection against tick attack. Therefore, the most effective way to protect your pet from a bite is a thorough examination.

Ticks have a habit of hiding in places inaccessible to the dog so that the pet cannot throw it off. Plus, they make their way to places where many blood vessels are concentrated. Therefore, in the first place, the tick must be sought there.

Where are the blood vessels in dogs? The question is interesting, but every amateur dog breeder should know the answer to it.First of all, ticks need to be searched on the stomach in the groin area, they really like to climb there, and it is very difficult for the dog to get them out of there.

The skin in this place is tender and the tick easily bites it, plus there are many blood vessels. Further, the second favorite place for parasites is the dog’s ears, they climb inside or are located around the auricle.

Immediately after the walk, and during the walk, be sure to inspect your pet's head. Another favorite spot for ticks is the armpit skin of a dog under the front legs.

Attention!
It’s also difficult for the dog to get there and they feel great there. Sometimes ticks bite the dog between the ribs, there are also many vessels and the dog cannot get the offender. Although very often dogs are not going to remove parasites from themselves.

The fact is that the tick saliva contains a substance that makes its bite absolutely painless. Therefore, when the symptoms of a tick bite in a dog begin to appear, the tick most likely has climbed deep into the body or completely hidden under the skin.

Bump after bite

Very often, at the place where you removed the tick, a lump is formed. This is a normal body reaction to the saliva of these parasites. If a dog has a lump after a tick bite, then you should not immediately panic. A lump after a tick bite in a dog can appear in two cases, the first is an allergy to insect saliva.

Such a lump is usually small, it does not hurt, does not fester and does not cause any inconvenience to the dog. Such a cone does not increase in size and after a few days resolves by itself. The second case is much more complicated.

A bump at the site of a tick bite in a dog may appear if you have not completely removed this tick from the body of the pet. Usually an insect's head or pieces of jaws remain in the wound. In this case, a bump appears at the site of the bite, which may bother your pet.

This formation is very dangerous, because the remains of the tick begin to decompose in the wound, thereby causing blood poisoning or encephalitis. Such a tumor grows slowly but surely, wool may fall out at the place of the lump, the dog may react painfully to touching this lump, and suppuration may appear.

If you find such a lump on the body of your pet. Then we advise you to consult a doctor immediately. Usually such a cone is cut out, or rather, the head of an insect is cut out. No need to be afraid, this operation is not complicated and an experienced veterinarian will do it in a couple of minutes.

In order to cut the head of the tick from the wound. The doctor punctures the lump with anesthesia, makes a small incision and extracts the remaining parts of the insect from the wound with tweezers.

Important!
The wound is then cauterized with brilliant green, and your pet can be free, the wound will heal in a couple of days, and with it the dog’s bump after a tick bite will also disappear.

Sometimes a dog’s lump may appear not only from a tick bite, in which case you need to follow your pet for several days, if the lump will increase or change color, then you should immediately consult a doctor, in such cases you can’t hesitate.

As soon as he gets out, he should be removed from the wound. You can not pull the tick, so you tear off his head, and she will remain in the wound. The consequences of this extraction, we have already described, a little higher.

Attention!
The tick should be pulled out by turning it clockwise, so you can remove it and not leave your legs, head and other rubbish in the wound. Sometimes it happens that you can’t get a tick in this way, then you have a direct road to the clinic, there most likely the tick will be cut from your pet’s body or from your body if it sticks to you.

In general, for walks in the woods, it is best to take a first-aid kit with you, which will contain all the necessary tools for extracting ticks from the body of an animal or your body.
