How to get rid of rats in the chicken coop - a review of means for scaring away and killing rodents

how to get rid of rats in the chicken coop
How to get rid of rats in the chicken coop

Hello! I do not have my own chicken coop, but the influx of fresh eggs has been established and is working properly.

One grandfather helps me in this in the village, which has a huge chicken coop. But here I somehow come to him, and my grandfather walks around the site and swearing loudly.

It turns out that rats were hosted in his chicken coop: they killed chickens and spoiled the walls. Right before my eyes, he began a decisive battle with these rodents. Want to learn how to get rid of rats in a chicken coop? What are the most effective ways? In the article below I will conduct a detailed analysis.

Rats in the chicken coop - control methods and feedback from practitioners

For breeders of poultry, rats are a natural disaster. Rodents spoil the chicken coop, drag the clutch and kill the chicks. In addition, most infectious diseases and parasites are transmitted by rats.

Important!
You can fight the invasion of rats yourself, there is no need to turn to specialists for help.

There are two ways to get rid of rodents: scare off or destroy.

Scare

Smell. Rats have a very delicate sense of smell, respectively, they are very sensitive to odors. Like many predators, rodents cannot stand the smell of scorched hair. This rodent is associated with danger in rodents, and they try to leave the territory as soon as possible.

Folk remedies

The oldest and most effective way to protect chickens from rodents is considered to be stove ash scattered on the floor. It sticks to the feet and hair of rats, and when they begin to lick, it enters the digestive system.

Ash is classified as caustic alkali, therefore, getting into the stomach of animals, causes discomfort and digestive problems. Using ash, you can get double benefits by scaring off rats and rid chickens of skin parasites.

You can fight rodents with the help of plants. The burdock and the Blackroot medicinal (rat-rat) well help. These plants have spines, which in contact with the wool inevitably cling to it. Rats are not able to get rid of sticking thorns, therefore they will not dig their burrows near these plants.

In the photo - Blackroot officinalis seeds and the plant itself at the time of flowering. Very often, the Black Root plant is used to fight rats in the chicken coop - although the name seems to be completely useless for this purpose.

Ultrasonic devices

You can purchase special repellers on the market that emit sound signals of a certain frequency. This sound is heard only by rodents and causes panic in them. Therefore, rats try to get out of the dangerous territory.

Advice!
It is important to provide for pest escape routes in the early days of ultrasound. In theory, everything is fine, in practice, such devices are strictly divided into 2 types.

Low-power on batteries, the range of which is low.Due to this, it is useless to use such ultrasonic repellers in a large chicken coop.

Professional appliances powered by mains. There are such powerful ones that are suitable only for warehouses (the instructions say that they should be included in the absence of people). In this method of disposal, the main thing is a balanced approach to choosing a specific model.

Of the well-known and well-publicized brands in Russia, the Tornado ultrasonic repeller is worth mentioning. About 10 different versions of these devices are produced: from those that are inserted into a socket like a fumigator to more stationary, operating from 220 volts.

“Torando 800” has a range of 800 meters and can be used in small chicken coops. Reviews indicate good efficacy against rats. The price of the device (winter 2015) is about 3,000 rubles.

The second most popular brands are Typhoon and Grad. Webferma.com considers the Grad A-1000 PRO + to be the most advanced model. The manufacturer claims that the device is equally effective in the fight against mice, moles, rats and insects (ticks, moths, mosquitoes, fleas). There is a possibility of inclusion on the timer, and the "unique radiation pattern" prevents addiction in pests.

An important plus of the “Grad” intimidator is the ability to adjust the radiation power. There is a serious minus: the sound from the device is more than 100 decibels.

Destruction

If rats cannot be removed, more radical measures will have to be used - physical destruction. You can do this as follows:

Biological

You just need to get rodents, for example, cats, in the farm of natural enemies. Fluffy hunters will quickly harass rats at your site. Cat-trap is the best solution that is only possible to fight rats in the chicken coop.

Attention!
This millennia-proven method is ideal for farmers of all sizes. The main thing is to choose a real hunter who will enter into a real battle with rats.

The best rat traps are the breed of Siberian cats. In addition to the potential laid down by genetics, they are perfectly adapted to the harsh Russian winters. Excellent Pied Piper is also obtained from the Sphinxes, but they can only work on hot summer nights.

Mechanical.

Various traps and traps belong to this method. It is worth noting that the effectiveness of this method is in doubt. Rats are very smart predators, so the set traps usually remain empty. But hens and especially chickens will come across them.

Glue traps are effective only against mice. It is unlikely that an adult rat will be able to hold glue.

Chemical

Aeration. Represents indoor spraying of substances such as chlorine, hydrogen phosphorus and carbon monoxide. This processing method is very complex and requires certain knowledge and skills.

Therefore, carbonation is used only in large poultry farms. Work is usually carried out by disinfection staff.

You can use the pollination method. Poisonous powder crumbles on the floor, which adheres to the legs and rodent hair. Rats are very clean, so they often lick. Thus, particles of powder enter the stomach, causing poisoning and death. This method is very effective, but not suitable for the chicken coop.

Poison. It is much easier to purchase poison baits on the market. Due to their composition, such baits attract rats with their smell, and pose a mortal danger to them. It is worth noting that this effective method has two significant drawbacks:

  • Most chemicals are dangerous not only for rats, but also for humans;
  • Bait attracts not only rodents, but also chickens and domestic animals (cats, dogs), sometimes - children.

Of the most effective means can be identified:

Ratid-1. This is a poisonous agent in the form of small granules. Recommended for use in residential and utility rooms. To clean rodents from the house and the chicken coop, one package (40 granules) is usually enough.

Important!
Recently there was Ratid-2. The advantages of baits are that they have an additive that prevents the decomposition of corpses, causing mummification of tissues. As a result, there is no odor or microbiological hazard on the farm. Packing 100 gr. costs about 60 rubles, delivered from Ukraine.

Goliath. This product is sold on the market in capacities from 1 to 10 kilograms. It is considered one of the most effective and widely used by pest control companies.

The principle of action of this drug is as follows. After entering the rat’s stomach, the substance does not cause instant death, thereby scaring off the rest of the rodents. The poison begins to act in 10-12 days, and all this time, the rats eat the bait, considering it safe.

"Goliath" causes oxygen starvation in rodents, so they tend to leave the room in the open. This will greatly facilitate the process of collecting the bodies of dead rats. The corpse is also mummified.

The cost of the drug depends on the volume of packaging:

  • 1 kg. - 2 800 rub.
  • 2 kg - 4 300 rub.
  • 3 kg - 6 500 rub.
  • 5 kg - 9,200 rubles.
  • 10 kg - from 15 000 rub.

Rats. Fast and effective drug. On the market, this substance is sold in ampoules. Use this bait as follows: one ampoule is mixed with 500 g. sunflower seeds and a tablespoon of sunflower oil.

The resulting mixture is laid out near rat holes and in places of frequent occurrence of rodents. As ingredients, you can use any bulk food products. After eating poison, the animal dies within 1-2 minutes.

Despite the apparent ease of use, poisons are the worst option for fighting rats. In addition to the dangers for birds and humans, a huge number of cats die from them: after eating a poisoned rodent, they almost certainly die as well.

How to protect chickens when using poisons

So that the bait does not cause fear in rats and remains inaccessible to chickens, you can use this method. You will need a wooden box, preferably with a hinged top lid. Two small holes need to be cut in the side walls, 8-10 cm in diameter. A rat, seeing an open space, without fear will go inside and eat the bait.

Poultry, cats and children will not be able to get poison. For chickens, such a box will be at the same time a convenient place to sit along with a perch.

How best to get rid of rats in the chicken coop: tips and tricks

The maintenance of chickens, in addition to the usual cares for the cleanliness and satiety of the wards, also presents unpleasant surprises, such as the appearance of pests.

Advice!
The invasion of rats must be stopped at the very first sign. Otherwise, they will cause irreparable damage to the household.

There are a lot of methods on how to get rid of rats in the chicken coop. It is important to choose the safest for chickens and the most effective against rodents.

Reasons for the appearance

The chicken coop is a real paradise for rats. It is dry and warm in winter. There is plenty of food: in addition to full feeders intended for the main inhabitants of the chicken coop and stocks of feed or grain, chickens carry delicious eggs. Rats show maximum activity at night.

Typically, a chicken coop is a freestanding building with an open chicken hole. Rats have a unique ability to penetrate and settle even in enclosed spaces, especially if there is an opportunity to enter freely.

In addition to the open manhole for chickens, the main way for rats to enter the chicken coop is clay floors and the lack of foundation. That is why it is recommended to build for chickens not temporary housing, but a solid structure. Pour the floors with a continuous layer of dense building material, for example concrete, and only top with natural litter for adsorption of moisture and insulation.

Rats start up even in those chicken coops that are located on stilts high above the ground. The reasons are simple - rodents climb on vertical surfaces perfectly. In nature, some of them lead a semi-wood lifestyle.

How rodents can harm chickens

Chickens that react very aggressively to mice and catch them no worse than cats react very carefully to rats. Over time, they simply get used to their presence.

The appearance of rodents in the chicken coop creates huge problems:

  1. Rodents are carriers of dangerous infectious diseases. They are regulars in trash and landfills. Even having settled in the chicken coop, they do not stop their raids in the nursery of pathogenic bacteria, microorganisms. Moving between neighboring houses, they may well bring along pathogens of chicken diseases, which pose a threat to humans.
  2. In addition to infections, they bring parasites with them. Together with them, fleas and ticks may appear in the chicken coop.
  3. Rats manage to steal not only food from feeders, but also stocks of grain, compound feeds, vitamin and mineral additives, root crops. The latter is especially dangerous: damaging the integrity of vegetables, they provoke their rot and spoilage.
  4. Rats steal eggs. Despite the fact that most of them prefer vegetable food, they cannot refuse such a treat.

By harming the hens, these animals damage the chicken house itself. Building a system of moves and manholes for their own comfort, they gradually destroy structural elements.

Methods of struggle

At home, rats in the chicken coop are fought as much as the whole history of poultry farming. It is completely impossible to destroy them, but there are ways to protect them from their hens.

Attention!
Progress has stepped far. At the industrial level, special devices and chemicals are produced. There are biological and mechanical methods of killing rats. Folk methods have not lost relevance and effectiveness. Therefore, how to get rats out of the chicken coop is up to you, choosing from the existing variety of remedies.

Ultrasonic devices. One of the most progressive and at the same time humane ways to destroy rats is to use an ultrasonic repeller. The principle of action is directed irritation of the senses and the nervous system of rodents. It causes panic, fear, discomfort, and thanks to the ability to change settings, it is not addictive.

In addition to rats, a powerful ultrasonic repeller will help get rid of mice and moles in the vicinity of the chicken coop. If you have rabbits, it is best not to use such installations.

When buying, pay attention to the radius of action - at least it should be enough for the chicken coop area.

Folk. The appearance of rats in the chicken coop always happens inappropriately, and you need to act as soon as possible. If it is not possible to quickly acquire any of the new-fangled inventions, you can destroy rats with the help of a wealth of folk experience:

  • Use oven ash. It is scattered around the chicken house at the rate of 1 standard 10-liter bucket on 5-10 m2 of floor surface. It is believed that alkali has a detrimental effect on the digestive system of rodents, helping to destroy them. Even if it does not affect uninvited guests, ash chickens will help get rid of parasites.
  • Fumigation of the chicken coop with burning hair. If you set fire to a woolen sock and fumigate the room with it, and put leftovers with traces of burning along the perimeter of the walls, you can get rid of rats for a long time. They carefully avoid danger, and the smell of fire makes it the best way to escape and escape from the chicken coop. As an option, it is proposed to set fire to the carcass of the rat with alcohol: lay on a metal tray and fumigate the chicken coop.
  • Use bait. The easiest way to kill rats with their passion is to eat. For this, alabaster, cement or lime is mixed into bulk products such as flour or sugar. It is recommended that a container of water be placed next to it so that a reaction probably occurs, but this is not necessary - after eating, the rat itself will find a source of moisture.

The second version of the lures is lard or meat, preferably with a strong smell, such as smoked, put on a piece of wood inside a half-filled barrel of water. It is placed at night in the middle of the chicken coop and a ladder is placed for the convenience of the pest. In the morning, check the catch.

Biological. The natural enemies of rats are cats. Not all, but only the most courageous - the Pied Piper. As a rule, these are ordinary yard cats. In villages, they are worth its weight in gold. They reliably help get rid of gray parasites, but there is always a risk that a useful predator will start to drag chickens.

Some breeds of terriers catch rats, but they must first be trained.

In order not to look for a purebred dog and not to overpay money for it and its training, there are recommendations to raise a rat that has the same qualities. To do this, you need to catch several live and healthy rodents.

Place them without feed in the barrel and securely close. A surviving individual will forever become a threat to its own kind. It is guaranteed to help destroy all pests in the area. It takes time, but it works.

In addition to natural enemies that help to destroy rats physically, there are plants acting no less efficiently. Mint and elderberry have a deterrent property.

Important!
You can also stock up on the seeds and herbs of Blackroot officinalis. According to popular belief, rats are afraid of its smell. Thorny seeds pose a serious threat to their coat: they cling tightly. The grass is laid out in the found moves or around the perimeter of the chicken coop.

Mechanical. Rats in the chicken coop require extreme caution. To destroy them, it is not enough to put a trap or a trap. This must be done so that the chickens are not affected. It should be borne in mind that rats are extremely intelligent pests and such devices bypass.

Craftsmen invent ingenious enough devices for their catch. For example, a large jar, the inner walls of which are covered with oil, and at the bottom there is a piece of goodies: the hens will not climb into it, and the rat, slipping down, will no longer be able to climb up.

In addition to the means and knowledge of measures to destroy rats, it’s a good idea to arrange mechanical prevention of their appearance:

  1. dig in sheet metal or a fine mesh around the chicken coop to a depth of about 50 cm;
  2. carefully close all cracks and holes in the foundation and walls. At the same time, it is recommended to add broken glass to the solution;
  3. raise the nests above the floor;
  4. do not leave for a long time and do not store food in the chicken coop.

Chemical. Industrial poultry farms kill rats right away and for sure. Chickens are quarantined, and the chicken coop is treated by spraying poisonous substances inside. You won’t hold such events at home: professional deratization requires serious financial investments.

It is much easier to destroy rats using available chemicals: they are sold in markets, in veterinary pharmacies, in hardware stores. True, periodically the preparations and the form of their disguise will have to be changed. Animals learn to avoid dangerous treats or just get used to the poison.

Among the most popular drugs are Krysid and Rat Death. It is recommended to buy funds based on denatonium benzoate, for example, Bitrex. In addition, the market has Ratindan and Zookumarin, as well as Phosphide and Zinc.

Securing chickens when using poisons

Destroying rats with poisons is quick and easy. However, the process is fraught with danger to all living creatures in the district. Hens, cats, dogs and even small children are at risk if decomposed poisonous substances in places accessible to them.

Poison is recommended to be placed in closed boxes with through holes designed only for rats. However, even such a precautionary method does not guarantee absolute safety. Having eaten the poison, the rat can go about his business.

Advice!
If death catches her in the open, then everyone will be at risk: from cats to curious chickens. Therefore, the chicken coop should be regularly inspected for the presence of corpses and discarded on time.

Raising rats is much more difficult than preventing their appearance. Before building a chicken coop, consider the design of the structure. Having maximally strengthened the foundation and the gulf of floors, you will get rid of one of the risk factors. Cleanliness, regular hygiene and food control will help to avoid a massive invasion of uninvited guests.

Harmful rodents in the chicken coop - we fight them right

Rats and mice are known carriers of various infections, including rabies, plague, leptospirosis, and also scabies mites and helminth eggs. Therefore, you must fight them!

In addition to the threat of terrible diseases, these pests bite almost everything that they find in their way: concrete, drywall, wiring, plastic. The damage that these bad rodents sometimes do can be colossal!

Therefore, if you find the first traces of uninvited guests in your chicken coop, you should immediately sound the alarm. Mice, as a rule, are calculated according to a specific smell, rats leave more obvious traces of their stay - stolen eggs, strangled young animals.

In addition to the terrible diseases that rats and mice can “reward” your birds, and then you, they, as already noted, steal eggs, eat grain, and even encroach on the life of birds. Especially easy they cope with chickens and youngsters. Rats are generally the smartest animals, which complicates the process of combating them.

The fact is that they quickly "think" that they want to get rid of them and bypass the prepared traps. In addition, it is believed that animals are able to "communicate" with each other and warn of a possible danger.

Attention!
Rats even have a peculiar hierarchy, they look after their old people, and young animals are taught to hunt and deftly bypass traps set by man. As a rule, the methods of getting rid of rats and mice are the same.

However, in order to get rid of rats forever, a person will have to use more cunning and resourcefulness, since this enemy is not simple and very dangerous!

People have been trying to fight harmful rodents since ancient times, because they constantly steal chicken eggs and chickens. Therefore, in addition to modern methods of fighting rats and mice, many continue to use grandfather methods.

I would like to highlight the most popular methods of getting rid of rodents: these are biological, mechanical, chemical and folk. Separately, we will also analyze such a type of struggle as an ultrasonic repeller. And then about all the methods in order.

Biological methods

This group of methods is based on the possibility of using animals that are enemies of rats and mice in the natural environment (cats, some types of dogs) to control rodents. We all know perfectly well that cats are excellent hunters and everyone can get a rat-catcher cat.

But, unfortunately, modern cats are more animals for the soul, not all of them are able to hunt. Pied-catchers are rather a rarity and character in these animals is peculiar and wayward. However, it is believed that the cat smell itself is able to deter rodents.

But while you check how your cat is capable of catching rats and mice, and whether its smell strongly scares them away, the population of rodents can grow greatly. Then you will need to think about other, more effective methods. Along with cats, methods related to the use of various plants can also be included in the group of biological methods.

It is believed that rodents do not tolerate some strong odors, in particular the smell of peppermint and elderberry.By the way, you can use both fresh mint and its oil, sold in pharmacies.

Take either a twig of a fresh plant or a piece of cloth drenched with peppermint oil and shove it further into the mink. It is believed that after such an aromatherapy session, rodents should leave your chicken coop. If elderberry grows near your site, then you can use it. The branches and roots of the plant are recommended to be crushed and laid out on the floor or also put into minks - rodents should leave.

Mechanical methods

Mechanical methods are based on various mousetraps, traps, glue baits. The main difficulty here is that the traps should be arranged so that hens do not get into them.

Important!
Given that rats often steal eggs, mousetraps are well placed near nests, which is sometimes problematic. Another difficulty is that the rats are very cunning and often bypass the bait prepared for them.

Recently, steel and glue traps have been popular. But, they are more likely to be more suitable for mice, because a physically strong rat can “escape” from such a trap. By the way, this type of trap is considered more humane, because not everyone is pleased to see an animal crushed in a mousetrap. Although, then what to do with the glued rodent is not clear: you won’t be released into the wild, and not everyone can finish off with their own hands.

Mechanical methods include some home-made traps. For example, this: take a bottle, pour in the smelling sunflower oil inside and shake it so that the oil spreads over the entire surface. You can put some additional bait in the bottle: lard, cheese, sausage, or you can do without it, rodents will be attracted by the smell of butter.

The plus is that you can easily put such a trap in your chicken coop, it will not do any harm to chickens. But the mouse that gets into such a bottle will not be able to get out of it, it will simply sort out its paws on a slippery surface from oil. For a rat, an ordinary bottle will be small, so you will need to take a bottle with a large neck.

Chemicals

If the number of pests in your chicken coop is large and the chicken eggs are constantly disappearing, it is worth thinking about using chemical pesticides to destroy them. This is the most common pest control method at the moment. Unfortunately, this method is far from always effective.

First, rats very quickly develop immunity to various poisons and poisons. Secondly, very often the hens themselves, other domestic animals and even people, especially the omnipresent children, suffer from the poison intended for rodents!

Be careful when laying out poison for rodents in your chicken coop! There are a lot of drugs that promise to save you from pests and they are sold everywhere. The most popular are Zookumarin, Ratindan, Phosphide, Zinc, Krysid. Effective is the drug "Rat Death." Indirect anticoagulants and preparations containing Bitrex (denatonium benzoate) are also used.

The inconvenience of the use of pesticides also lies in the fact that it is not known where exactly the harmful animal will meet its death, and it is not a pleasant occupation to gather over the corpse site. It is advised to carry out chemical processing several times in a row until the traces of your rats completely disappear, because dead animals may be replaced by new ones.

Folk methods

To protect their economy from the ubiquitous rats and mice, people have come up with many methods, among which there are quite eccentric. Let's consider some of them. There are many adherents of this method: in the chicken coop itself, along the walls, near the alleged rodent holes, you need to sprinkle abundantly ordinary wood ash.

It contains alkali, which corrodes the animals' paws. When they lick it, it continues to cause irritation of the mouth and esophagus.Naturally, rodents do not like it and they cease to steal eggs.

Advice!
Some people prepare such an “dish” for uninvited guests: they mix flour, alabaster or gypsum, add sugar and lime.

As a rule, the animal does not refuse such a treat, but then dies painfully and for a long time, having received a severe burn of internal organs. The method is quite cruel, so whether you use it is up to you.

They also talk about such a method among the people. At night, a barrel is placed in the chicken coop, half filled with water, and a piece of lard or meat is thrown there.

Near the barrel, you need to build a bookcase of boxes so that the rat can rise. A rat, having entered the house, will be interested in the smell from the barrel and will jump for prey. They say that in the morning you can expect a solid "catch".

For the next method, you will need part of the rat carcass. It is put on a shovel, doused with alcohol and set on fire, and then the chicken coop is fumigated with this carcass. It is believed that for at least a year, you can forget about how rodents steal your hens or eggs.

I would like to mention one more method, which can be found a lot of information on the Internet, but it is not known whether someone used it in their own households. Perhaps because the method is quite cruel.

For him, a couple of dozen rats are caught, which are closed in a barrel or other isolated space without food or drink. After some time, among the starving animals, a real struggle for survival begins.

The strongest eat the weakest until a few of the strongest males remain, among which the only "winner" who is already accustomed to the meat of their relatives remains. It is believed that such a "rat king", when he is released, will destroy the population of his brothers with his own hands, because now he does not tolerate competition.

Ultrasonic repeller

Consider also such a modern method of controlling rodents as an ultrasonic repeller. It is considered an advanced and humane way, because it does not kill animals, but simply creates conditions in which the presence of pests becomes extremely uncomfortable.

Attention!
This device emits vibrations of such frequency that they are not audible to people and your birds, but are unacceptable to rats and mice. In addition, the oscillation frequency changes all the time to exclude the addiction of rodents. The convenience of the repeller is that it certainly will not do any harm to your chickens and at the same time covers a rather large area.

But, although ultrasound is not heard by a person, it also affects him negatively. Therefore, it is recommended to periodically turn off the repeller, while, for example, you are cleaning in the chicken coop or collecting eggs.

Precautionary measures

Today we talked with you about how to remove the terrible pests - rats and mice. But, you can take some precautions so that these rodents do not disturb you and your chicken coop.

The main thing you can do is build your house properly. It is preferable to make a foundation for your chicken coop, and sometimes broken glass is added to concrete or scattered in the corners, and only then they make a screed.

If you don’t have a foundation, and the chicken coop is on supports, deepen sheet metal along the perimeter of the structure into the ground, by 30 centimeters. As a rule, rats make their way to visit your hens through the undermining in the ground. It is very important that there are no holes in your chicken coop, be sure to concrete them if they appear.

Do not place nests on the floor, it is better to place them at a certain height from the floor, because rats often steal chicken eggs. Do not store grain in the chicken coop and do not leave leftover food in the feeders at night - rodents steal everything they come across.

With special care, watch your chickens and young animals, there are cases when rodents steal or strangle them. It is advisable that your corral be fenced with a grid not only around the perimeter, but also on top.

How to get rid of rats in the chicken coop efficiently and forever

Lovely, at first glance, rodents, who have not been asked for guests in your house, are actually able to deliver a lot of trouble to the household. They are not only carriers of dangerous infections, but they can also steal eggs, if the opportunity arises.

Harm to birds

Rats that have chosen the chicken coop for their permanent residence can infect your bird with dangerous diseases. These include plague, rabies, leptospirosis and other unpleasant infections. Rodents in the chicken coop can cause scabies mites and worm eggs in birds.

Important!
These animals are very fond of eliminating any obstacles that prevent them from moving inside the chicken coop. Small pests can destroy drywall, damage wiring, and damage concrete.

It is possible to suspect that rats entered the chicken coop according to characteristic signs: strangled chickens, stolen eggs, gnawed grain, as a result of which your chickens risk being hungry.

The fight can be difficult, but it’s in your best interest to do everything to get rid of the rats. Often these smart animals easily bypass the set traps. They warn their own kind of danger. Therefore, you should be patient, show all your inventiveness, in order to get rid of such a strong and dangerous enemy once and for all.

Methods

Not all means are allowed to be used to drive rats out of the chicken coop, because some of them can cause irreparable harm to the health of your hens. Methods for controlling pests should be selected carefully.

If the traps you used and other folk methods turned out to be ineffective, and there are a lot of rats in the chicken coop, it is better to use the services of specialists. They will carry out professional deratization of the chicken house using safe means for the health of poultry.

Today, there are a number of popular methods that help quickly and effectively get rid of domestic pests. Let us dwell on each of them in more detail.

Mechanical. This method of expelling rodents from the chicken coop involves the use of traps, mousetraps, glue-based lures. Mousetraps should not be positioned so that the hens themselves become their prey. Although, this method could be the best option.

Often clever animals bypass traps. Glue lures are more likely to be suitable for catching mice, since physically stronger rats can even be released from the trap after falling into the trap.

Advice!
However, this type of mousetrap is called more humane, since not every person is able to safely get out of the traditional trap the mutilated body of the rodent. What to do with a pest that has fallen into the glue trap, everyone decides individually.

Some craftsmen themselves make a trap for rats, taking the bottle as a basis. Sunflower oil is poured into it, you can put cheese, sausage, lard as an additional bait. Such a trap is safe for residents of the house, but a rat that has got inside will not be able to get out of there on its own.

Biological. This method involves the use of animals for which rats in the wild are desirable prey. Enemies of rodents are cats and some dog breeds.

However, it is not so easy to acquire a cat-catcher, as modern puffies often lose their hunter function by nature. But to get a cat does not hurt - even its smell repels rodents well.

Biological methods also include the use of such plants, the smell of which is not tolerated by pests - this is elderberry and mint. In order to remove rodents, it is necessary to place twigs of fresh mint or a piece of material moistened in its oil in the mink.

Elderberry branches and roots should be chopped, placed on the chicken coop floor or also put deep into the mink. It is believed that the smell of plants can scare off rodents, and they will leave the room forever.

Chemical. Chemical pesticides help poultry farmers fight pests. During their use, care must be taken not to harm the poultry. Modern drugs Krysid, Zinc, Zookumarin, Ratindan, Phosphide provide indispensable assistance to all owners of domestic chickens.

Well-proven over the years, a drug called "Rat Death". You can use tools such as indirect anticoagulants.

Attention!
Drugs containing denatonium benzoate, also known as Bitrex, will also help. The disadvantage of using chemical agents is the need to collect the corpses of animals, which is unlikely to bring joy to the owner of poultry.

Folk. People have long been preoccupied with devising ways to catch or expel a rat from the chicken coop. The result was the emergence of many methods, among which there are quite unusual. Consider some popular folk tricks.

The use of ash. It is crushed and placed on the floor in the home of chickens. For 5 - 10 square meters, you need to take 1 bucket of ash. The alkali contained in it corrodes the surface of the paws of pests, and, getting into the stomach, irritates its walls. After this procedure, rodents tend to leave the uncomfortable area.

The culinary way. Alabaster and flour are placed in a bowl in equal parts. Lime and sugar are added to this mixture. Near the finished poison you need to put a bowl of water. The mixture, swallowed by pests and washed down with liquid, turns into a frozen lump inside the stomach, which causes indigestion.

Rat carcass fumigation. After removing all the hens from the house, you need to put a dead rodent on a shovel, sprinkle it with alcohol and set it on fire. They say that after fumigating the premises with this method, pests most often disappear forever.

Barrel of water and bait. At night, a half-filled barrel of water is placed inside the house. Pieces of meat or fat are placed there. Crates are placed next to the rodent so that it can climb closer to the barrel. In the morning we should expect a rich catch of rat corpses.

Ultrasound. Ultrasonic repellers are recognized as the newest way to remove rats from the house. They are not able to prevent the appearance of new pests in the room, which is a small minus. These devices with the help of ultrasound affect the hearing organs and the nervous system of rodents.

Ultrasonic traps should work indoors around the clock. Even the most powerful devices, the effect of which is the constant reflection of ultrasound, consume no more than 15 watts of electricity.

Important!
They are installed at a level of at least 1 meter from the floor surface. It is advised to direct the device to the center of the house, the opposite wall or ceiling. Indoor escape routes for pests should be prevented.

High-quality devices can operate at temperatures from -40 to +80. Among the models of repellers that exist today, you can choose an acceptable one for the price and characteristics.

Precautionary measures

To prevent rodents from disturbing your house and making adjustments to the measured life of its inhabitants, observe the following precautions:

  • When the house for chickens will be built, make the foundation correctly by adding broken glass to the concrete or placing it in the corners. After such manipulations, you can proceed to screed.
  • If the house is on supports without a foundation, it is advised to deepen sheet metal into the ground around the perimeter.
  • Most often, pests penetrate the room through undermining.
  • Concrete all cracks identified during the construction of the house.
  • Do not place the slots on the floor, it is better to place them at a height. So rodents will not be able to steal eggs.
  • Do not store grain in the house, do not leave it overnight in the feeders.
  • Watch out for chickens - rodents love to steal and strangle young animals.
  • It is best to enclose the corral with a grid, not only around the perimeter, but also from above.

Overview of methods - how to remove rodents from the chicken coop

Pests can be removed in two ways: by repelling and killing. In addition, each method has several methods. Consider the most effective of them.

“Rat Death” is a modern Italian drug, which is a kind of plasticine placed in a filter bag. The weight of each such "dose" is about 10 grams. The components of the poison attracting rats and mice are sunflower oil, flour and sugar.

The main active ingredient is brodifacum, an anticoagulant that kills rodents within a few days, even after a single dose. Having tasted the "Rat Death" pests die of suffocation, without causing suspicion among their brethren.

The effect of the drug (death of rodents) is usually achieved 3-4 days after ingestion of the poison. An important advantage of Rat Death is its low price. A package weighing 200 grams (15-20 sachets) costs about 100 rubles.

Goliath (Germany) is an expensive, but at the same time the most effective drug to date for 100% destruction of rats and mice. It is used in its work by professional disinfection and disinfestation services. Having used Goliath, the pest dies only after 8-12 days, which is very important (other rats will not suspect anything and will absorb poison together).

Advice!
Death occurs as a result of oxygen starvation, after which the corpse of a rat mummifies without causing a fetid odor. "Goliath" is ideal in everything except the price (a kilogram bucket of the drug costs 2500 rubles).

Poisonous baits pose a mortal danger not only for rodents, but also for chickens, so you can’t just put poison in the house.

  1. For these purposes, you need to build a box of plywood with a convertible top.
  2. Small holes are made in the side walls (on each side) with a diameter of 6-8 cm so that the rat can penetrate inside and the birds have no access.
  3. Inside the box they put dishes with poison.

Ultrasound. Special devices — ultrasonic repellers — help make rats and mice leave the house and the surrounding area. A small device emits vibrations in the ultrasonic range.

Neither humans nor pets perceive these waves, but they are depressing for all rodents. To exclude addictive pests, the oscillation frequency changes all the time.

Ultrasonic scare devices are convenient to use: just install the device in the chicken coop and connect it to the network to spoil the mood of all rodents in the area.

The benefits of using ultrasonic waves are obvious:

  • rodents do not die, but simply leave (no need to search and clean rat corpses);
  • unlike poisons, they are non-toxic;
  • it’s enough to buy a device once to put an end to rodents once and for all.

On sale you can find ultrasonic scare devices from different manufacturers - Tornado, Grad, Chiston, etc. Each model is presented in different modifications that differ in power (radius of coverage). So, the Tornado-800 device (effective area - 800 square meters) costs about 3.5 thousand rubles.

Folk remedies

Rats and mice do not tolerate the smell of some herbs, for example, the bitter-tart aroma of wormwood.

Attention!
If dry wormwood bunches are hung and laid out in the house, this will scare away the pests. Mint, tansy, elderberry, ledum, chamomile - all this can also be used in the fight against rodents.

Fresh or dried plants can be chopped and laid out in rag bags. They are hung around the perimeter of the bird house.

Basic rules - how to deal with rodents before they appear

Any problem is always easier to prevent than to solve. Therefore, even at the design stage of the poultry house, protection systems against uninvited guests should be provided. A serious obstacle for mice and rats will be the foundation with the addition of broken glass.

In the absence of a foundation, protecting the chicken coop from rats will help sheet metal dug around the entire perimeter of the tar (to a depth of not less than half a meter).

One of the most affordable and effective ways to prevent the appearance of rodents in the house is the use of natural repellents (“repellers”). These smart creatures can smell from afar, so they will prefer to find a more comfortable place for feeding.

Do not store grain in the house and, if possible, do not leave leftover food in the feeders overnight. After all, it is food that attracts rodents.

At all times, cats were the main enemies of mice and rats, so it would not be superfluous to have at least one rat trap on the farm. Even if she does not turn out to be a noble hunter, the very presence of a cat's spirit will make mice and rats think.
