Whitefly: pest, fight, means, how to get rid
Hello dear reader!

It turns out that even in large garden centers, no matter how experts carefully monitor the condition of the plants being sold, pests are found.

So in our favorite place, where we usually buy seedlings for the garden, there was a whole invasion of whiteflies.

It’s good that they noticed in time, otherwise some of the plants would go to waste, and the store would suffer losses. Whitefly: pest, fight, means, how to get rid and other useful information you can read here.

The content of the article:

Pest Control

Damage to indoor and garden flowers is often caused by a small butterfly - whitefly. Its length is only 1.5-3 mm, the body and wings are white, covered with powdery pollen. The adult whitefly, like its voracious larvae, eats the sap of plants and causes them great harm.

Until death! The leaves are discolored, the plant loses its vitality and goes into another world. But not everything is so pessimistic. Getting rid of whiteflies is easy. Of course, if you find her in time.

How to detect a whitefly?

Very simple. You can see a strange white moth flying over the plant, similar to a moth. This should alert you. Touch the leaves, shake them. If a whitefly pest develops your planting, then a white cloud of moths will immediately appear above the plant. The presence of a winged pest can be suspected by the following signs:

  • the presence on the lower surface of the leaf plate of translucent scales (often in large numbers) - whitefly larvae;
  • the appearance on the plant of a sticky, shiny coating - honey dew. Like aphids, white flowers on white flowers secrete honey dew as waste;
  • black spots on the plant arising from the development of soot fungus - the eternal companion of honey dew;
  • the plant begins to lag behind in growth, the leaves turn yellow, curl.

When and where does the whitefly appear?

Whitefly on indoor flowers and garden plants appears mainly in the warm summers with frequent rainfall. Why? Because this midge loves a combination of high temperature and high humidity. Below 10 degrees - a killer temperature for her, all life processes in the whitefly colony cease (while the eggs remain alive and successfully winter).

Important!
Out of season, the favorite place for whiteflies is greenhouses and greenhouses. Especially those in which there is no effective ventilation and the plants are too close to each other. Therefore, the fight against whitefly is also possible until the appearance of the pest.

The only thing required is not to provide for the whitefly “resort” living conditions. It follows:

  • do not thicken the landing;
  • provide airing of landings;
  • do not spray in wet weather;
  • to strengthen plant health through the use of biostimulants (amulets, domotseps, epin), fertilizers.

How to fight?

You can deal with whitefly both by folk and modern methods using chemical preparations. There are many means to combat whitefly: traps, sprays, sticks, soluble powders

Most chemicals are effective because they poison plant juice with their poisons. After drinking poisoned juice, adult whiteflies and their larvae die in a matter of hours. It should be understood that the eggs at the same time remain intact. Therefore, in order to consolidate the "lethal" action, it is recommended to repeat the treatment with poisons 1-2 times with a break of a week.

Folk remedies for whiteflies are in their most contact action. That is, they do not penetrate into the sap of the plant, but fall on the body of pests and thereby destroy them. Traps and fumigators should be included in a separate niche of measures against whitefly. They require long-term use, since they destroy only adults.

Traps - glue traps for flying and crawling

You can get rid of whiteflies by hanging special glue traps over the affected plants. They are produced by many companies: Pheromone, ARGUS, Bona Forte, etc. Traps are small sheets of cardboard or plastic coated with a layer of non-drying glue. It has no color and odor, is not toxic.

Traps are bright yellow, attracting whiteflies. Adherence of insects occurs at any, even the lightest, touching them on the adhesive surface. By the way, in addition to whiteflies, other pests can also fall into the trap: mushroom mosquitoes, mineral flies, aphids, thrips and even a spider mite.

Attention!
Bona Forte traps help get rid of adult whiteflies and eventually destroy their population.

Traps are not such a difficult device, so you can make them yourself if you wish. To do this, you need to take pieces of thick cardboard, paint them in bright yellow color and cover with petroleum jelly, a mixture of honey and rosin, castor oil. Instead of cardboard, you can use plywood or hardboard.

Traps are mounted on a wooden, plastic or metal holder and placed in a pot with the affected plant. Many traps come with wire mounts that hang over the crown of a plant. If the whitefly appeared in the greenhouse, then it is enough to place traps at the rate of 1 pc. on 10 m2. At home, you need to set a trap on each window sill.

It should be remembered that the adhesive surface is unsafe for pollinating insects (bees, butterflies), so after catching whiteflies, traps should be removed. Instead of traps, you can use special adhesive tapes from flies, which are also hung over plants.

Whitefly Fumigator

Fumigators (with liquid, plates) against flies or mosquitoes can significantly reduce the population of whiteflies. It is necessary to turn on the fumigator as close as possible to the affected plants, close the windows and doors.

Advice!
In this case, it is impossible for humans and animals to be indoors - the possibility of poisoning is great.Whiteflies do not tolerate chemical fumes from the fumigator.

Fighting folk remedies

The simplest methods of controlling whiteflies, operating at the initial stage of “podshellenie” pests. They are based on the violation of the life cycle of insects.

Wiping leaves with water

Larvae turn into adults in a week. All this time they are actively eating and are on the underside of leaf plates. To reduce the number of pests, you need to destroy the larvae.

To do this, every week the leaves are wiped with a sponge dipped in water. It is advisable to add a small amount of soap to the water. When processing it is necessary to try to remove all the larvae from the leaves. Over time, the whitefly population will be destroyed.

This method is suitable for a small number of plants. In greenhouses, volume plantings, water treatment is an unreasonably complex and often ineffective procedure. Wiping the leaves with water helps get rid of whiteflies and keep the plant clean.

Decrease in temperature up to 10 ° C

With a decrease in temperature, adult whiteflies die. However, some eggs and larvae can still survive, falling into a state of hibernation. Then, as soon as the temperature rises to 15 ° -18 ° C, they will again begin their subversive activities.

Important!
Other folk remedies for whiteflies are special biological solutions used for spraying and watering.

1. Soap solution

Laundry or tar soap (grated, chopped with a knife) is dissolved in water at a concentration of 1: 6. The solution is whipped into a strong foam and applied to the plant with a sponge. You can use a solution for spraying (without prior whipping) the green parts of the plant.

The surface of the earth near the plant is also carefully sprayed, trying not to get into the deep layers of the soil. Sometimes one treatment is enough to completely destroy the whitefly, otherwise, repeat after a week. Soap solution is very effective, but if the concentration of soap is exceeded, it can cause burns on delicate leaves.

2. The infusion of garlic

6 g of garlic (2 medium cloves) are crushed and pour 1 liter of water. They insist in a dark place for a day, then filter and the plants are sprayed with the resulting infusion. Usually requires 2-3 treatments with a break per week.

3. Yarrow infusion

80-90 g of yarrow leaves are poured with 1 liter of water. Insist 2 days, filter and spray the whitefly-affected plantings 2-3 times at weekly intervals.

4. Tobacco infusion

A pack of cigarettes (type "Prima") is crushed, pour 1 liter of hot water. Put the solution in a dark place for 5 days. Then filter the resulting infusion and spray the plants every 3 days until the pest is completely destroyed.

5. Infusion of dandelion

Take 40 g of rhizomes and 40 g of dandelion leaves, chop and pour 1 liter of water. Insist 3-4 days. Then filter the infusion and spray the plantings 2 times with a break of a week.

How to get rid of with the help of "chemistry"

How to deal with whitefly if folk remedies have been tried, but to no avail?

Attention!
It remains to get modern chemicals from the arsenal - they will cope with the whitefly quickly and effectively.

So, what tools can I advise?

1. Actara

Aktara - a tool for whitefly No. 1. This is a systemic drug with a long period of action (3-5 weeks of protection). In order to destroy the whitefly, the plant is watered with Aktara's solution under the root. And that’s all!

Since both larvae and adult butterflies feed on plant sap (which contains the active substance of Actara - thiamethoxam), the entire population dies. In some especially neglected cases, it is recommended not only to water, but also to spray Aktara plants, and 3 times with an interval of 7 days.

Tip: in order to destroy the whitefly the first time, it is recommended to make a strong solution of Actara - 3-4 times more concentrated than indicated on the package. For example, the instructions say that a 1.4 g sachet is dissolved in 10 liters of water.

With an unwavering hand, we make a more lethal solution: dissolve the entire contents of the sachet in 2-3 liters and water the plants. No harm, burns, etc. from Aktara does not happen, but the whitefly will be lost almost 100%.

Advice!
Actara is used in the fight against whitefly most often because of its effectiveness and ease of processing - it is enough to water the plant only once!

2. Confidor

Very effective insecticide of systemic and contact action. Already after 1.5 hours after watering and spraying with this drug, pests begin to die. To destroy the whitefly, one treatment is usually enough.

The active substance of Confidor is imidacloprid. The same substance, only in different concentrations, is contained in the following preparations: Appleood, Copfidor, Admir, Gaucho, Provado, Commander, Marathon. In fact, they are all interchangeable.

3. Akarin (Agravertin)

It destroys almost all pests, including whiteflies, spider mites and even some types of gall nematodes! Used for spraying. It is necessary to moisten the leaves well, it is desirable to get directly onto the pest (for example, spray the solution directly into a cloud of whiteflies).

Important!
Acarin is a contact-intestinal insecticide, that is, it penetrates the body of the pest through food and direct contact.

4. Spark (gold, bio, double effect)

It is produced in the form of long-acting sticks, water-soluble tablets, powder, liquid in ampoules. Used for watering, quickly penetrates the roots and tissues of the plant, holding there for 25 days. As a rule, the entire whitefly population is destroyed in 1 treatment.

5. Fitoverm

Insect acaricide, suitable for the destruction of almost all insect pests. It is enough to carry out 1-2 sprayings of the plant with a phytoderm to destroy the whitefly and all its offspring.

6. Actellik

Means for the destruction of insects and ticks. With whitefly he copes with a bang. However, it should be remembered that Actellik is very toxic (toxicity class 2), has an unpleasant odor.

In addition to the listed funds, you can get rid of whiteflies using the following drugs:

  • Zeta
  • Rowikurt;
  • Inta Vir;
  • Fufanon;
  • Top star;
  • Alatar.

Methods of control in the greenhouse and on indoor plants

Whiteflies - small insects resembling microscopic moths, only 2 mm long, are covered with white or yellow powdery pollen. The whitefly family includes several genera and many species of these sucking insects that are part of the same order.

Description

These dangerous pests feed on plant sap, which causes them to weaken, dry out and even die. When fed, pests consume more vegetable juice than they require. Excess juice is released in the form of "honey dew" on which sooty mushrooms settle.

The plant becomes sticky, covered with a black coating. As a result, the plant not only loses its decorative effect, but its normal respiration and photosynthesis are disrupted. In addition, whiteflies are carriers of dangerous plant diseases.

Usually whiteflies are hardly noticeable, as they hide on the underside of leaves. But it is worth touching the plant, as a white cloud of insects soars into the air, flies to a neighboring plant and again sits on leaves from the bottom of the plate. Females prefer young leaves, where they lay 10-20 eggs, attaching them with thin stems to the lower surface of the leaf.

Attention!
Eggs hatch larvae hatch. They are able to move around the plant in search of a suitable place for food, where they stick to the leaf and begin to eat. It is at the stage of the larva that whiteflies harm the plant. The larvae grow, become covered with a wax coating - puparia - and stop eating.

At this stage of its development, whiteflies are inaccessible both to entomophages and to the action of chemicals. After some time, females hatch, they live for about a month, spreading to other plants (not only on their own, but also with a stream of air over fairly considerable distances) and constantly laying eggs.

In the warm season, whiteflies live in open ground, in winter only in the tropics and subtropics or in greenhouse, room, and greenhouse conditions.

Nature of defeat

Chlorotic yellow fuzzy spots appear on the leaves, with severe damage - sticky secretions and black coating of sooty mushrooms. Leaves gradually curl and fade. On the underside of the leaves, especially the young ones, colonies of white small insects are visible that take off if disturbed.

Larvae are hardly noticeable; they look like translucent greenish-yellow scales 0.6-0.9 mm long attached to the lower surface of the leaf blade.

Prevention

Regular thorough inspection of the plant. Inspect purchased plants especially carefully. Place sticky glue traps among the plants, place bait plants that are primarily affected by whiteflies - fuchsia, hibiscus, tomatoes, gerbera, abutilon.

It is no secret that whitefly is an extremely annoying and unpleasant insect. Sometimes it is not possible to get rid of it. Therefore, when you first find a whitefly, immediately take measures to eliminate it, until it has spread to your entire collection.

Despite the fact that the whitefly is extremely selective in gastronomic terms and never refuses pelargonium and fuchsia, at the same time it does not disdain tomato and hibiscus seedlings. If the lesion is small, then you can try machining the plant against whiteflies.

Mechanical means of control

The leaves of the plant, especially the lower part of the leaves, where the whitefly masonry is located, are thoroughly washed with soapy water and washed off with water. Also, this procedure should be done even when the lesion is already large, so you will help the plants begin to breathe again. Typically, machining alone is not enough and will subsequently be required again.

You can use glue traps against whiteflies. You can buy traps from Bona Forte, which at one time helped me a lot in the fight against mushroom mosquitoes. You can use masking tape from flies. Cut it into small squares, about 8x8 cm, split the matches and insert them there.

Advice!
It is advisable to purchase adhesive tape company "Fumitox" with attractant (special bait) or "Moskitol". They are more effective in comparison with tapes of other firms. By the way, adhesive tapes from flies will be an excellent prophylactic against whiteflies in the greenhouse, along with other chemicals.

If you want to be very confused, then you can use for the same purpose sheets of thick paper or cardboard, cut into squares and greased with Vaseline, rosin with honey or castor oil. But they will be less effective.

Biological products

If you do not want to resort to chemistry and the lesion site of the whitefly is still not very large, then you can try to use biological remedies. Medicinal dandelion against whitefly.

Take 20-30 g of chopped rhizomes and 40 g of green leaves, fill with a liter of water, insist for 2-3 hours, then filter and immediately use to spray indoor plants as a prophylaxis against whiteflies. In the presence of pests, spraying is repeated several times with an interval of 10 to 15 days.

Also, in the fight against whitefly at the initial stage, an infusion of garlic may be effective. To do this, take 100 grams of garlic cloves, chopped from and pour 0.5 liters of water, after which they insist for 4-5 days. For spraying, take 5 grams of infusion and dilute in 1 liter of water.

Chemicals

Well, when the number of whiteflies exceeds all conceivable and inconceivable sizes and biological remedies no longer help, then insecticides come to the rescue.

Recently, ACTARA, which has a high level of effectiveness against sucking insects, has established itself well. It is this drug that is desirable and should be used in the greenhouse, since its working solution is applied under the root. If you can’t buy ACTARA, then you can use wood ash, which is scattered on the ground with an even thin layer.

Important!
Most pests do not like her. ACTARA will be no less effective when used indoors. AKTAR should preferably be combined with other drugs, for example, such as ACTELLIK. It is used when it is necessary to quickly reduce the density of the pest.

Of other insecticidal preparations against whiteflies, they are used: FUFANON, INTAVIR, DECIS, AMBUSH, ECAMET, NUDUSAN, PYRIMIFOSMETIL, PERMETRIN, RESMETRIP, PIRETRUM. Pyrethroids are also effective: CIPERMETRIN, TALSTAR, ARRIVO, FUR.

You can use a microbiological preparation based on the entomopathogenic fungus Verticillium lecanii, which grows into the body cavity of the insect and, releasing toxins, causes the death of the whitefly: VERTICILLIN.

When using any chemical or biological means of protection against whiteflies, it is advisable to use an adhesive, that is, add a little shampoo, household or insecticidal soap to the working solution. When using an adhesive, the effect of drugs on the plant becomes longer.

Predatory and parasitic entomophages

For large collections, as well as for winter gardens, predatory and parasitic entomophages are recommended for protecting plants from whiteflies: enkarsia (Encarsia formosa) and trichaporus (Encarsia partenopea). Ankarsia can be used as a prophylactic; usually one individual per m² is enough.

If a pest is detected, enkarzia is released by 10-20 pcs per cucumber, 5-10 per tomato and eggplant per m². On the other hand, if the density of the pest is very high, then the number of predators can be increased.

How to get rid of whiteflies on tomatoes

Whitefly is a small white moth. The size of this pest is from 1 to 2 mm. The wings are covered with a plaque reminiscent of powder. An adult can lay up to 250 eggs on tomato leaves. The larvae of these insects attach to the back of the tomato leaf and suck out the juice from it. As a result, the leaves dry and fall.

Whitefly is a small moth

There are several types of this pest. The greenhouse whitefly is found mainly in warm places on our planet. It affects tomatoes, cucumbers, as well as some flowers. If you find a pest on tomato bushes, you must immediately begin to fight it. Otherwise, the insect, having destroyed the tomatoes, will move to the bushes of other vegetables and berries.

Whitefly Control Methods

The fight against this pest must begin already in the greenhouse, where tomato bushes grow. For starters, you can use special traps lubricated with adhesive. Today they can be freely found in the market or in a specialized store.

Attention!
You can make such a trap yourself. Choose a yellow cardboard, and with a brush, cover it with petroleum jelly. Butterflies will flock to the bright color of the cardboard and simply stick to it. When insects cling to the entire surface, you need to wipe it and grease again with an oil.

Time and experience suggest that whiteflies can be removed with the emulsion used in scabies. This product can be purchased at the pharmacy. We breed about 50 grams of the drug in one liter of water and spray the problematic plant bushes.

Yarrow solution. Grind 80g of yarrow, pour one liter of hot water and leave in a dark place for a day. Then the filtered solution can be processed plants.Large leaves are best wiped with a cloth soaked in this liquid.

The concentrated solution of laundry soap. To do this, grate the soap and pour warm water in proportion (1: 6). Infusion of garlic. Grind 10 g of garlic and add two liters of water. Insist for 24 hours, then strain. Fresh infusion to spray tomatoes after sunset.

Bushes of tomatoes are treated with a stream of clean water. Small moths can easily be flushed with water from a hose. After that, it is necessary to loosen the soil under the bushes. As experienced gardeners advise, before spraying the plant with one of the means, it is necessary to clear the leaves from plaque and adults.

Spraying should be done no more than 2 times a week until the pest disappears completely. If you find a whitefly on tomatoes too late, you will have to take drastic pest control measures. In this case, you need to resort to the use of chemicals.

In addition, a poisonous agent will have to process not only tomato bushes, but also nearby plants to prevent them from becoming infected with this pest. Today, you can find in stores a wide variety of chemical agents to control whitefly.

These are drugs such as Actellik, Confidor, Pegasus, Verticillin, Fufanon, etc. In the instructions attached to each of these drugs, you can learn about the methods of using the poison.

Preventive actions

The fight against whiteflies, as well as with any plant pest, can last the whole season. The use of chemicals adversely affects plants, people, and domestic animals. Therefore, avid gardeners know that it is better to prevent the appearance of harmful insects. Whitefly is a fragile moth.

Advice!
Firstly, from the very beginning of planting tomatoes, you need to adhere to preventive measures. When planting tomatoes in a greenhouse, take care of good ventilation. In addition, here the required air temperature should not be higher than 15 °. Tomatoes, too, should not grow very close together.

Before planting tomatoes, it is advisable to paint with fresh paint all parts of the greenhouse design. Remove the land from last year's tops and grass, and then dig it carefully. For winter, do not leave compost in the garden, as this will be a great place where whiteflies can winter.

During frosts, you can open the greenhouse so that it freezes. If you buy ready-made seedlings of tomatoes, be sure to thoroughly check the plants so that they are not infected by pests.

Folk methods

How to get rid of whiteflies - two remedies from readers.

Tobacco control method

In 2013, in my greenhouse (3.57 m), a whitefly appeared on tomatoes. I knew that it did not take poison, and besides, we had already plucked red fruits. On the Internet they read that it flies to yellow. We cut squares from cardboard, painted with yellow paint, anointed with non-drying glue and hung in a greenhouse.

Only I fell into these traps, and the whitefly sat quietly on its own tomatoes and did its dirty work. Three weeks passed, the leaves turned black on the tomatoes and began to crumble. And then I remembered how quickly I coped with aphids on cucumbers in a greenhouse.

I made a mini-bonfire: I put a newspaper on the iron circle from the barrel, a few slivers on it, and a handful of tobacco on top. She closed all the windows and doors, lit a fire and left. I did all this for the night. In the morning I came to the greenhouse - the cucumbers are green, and all the aphids died. I decided to try this method on tomatoes.

I read somewhere that cucumbers like tobacco smoke, and it is harmful to tomatoes, but there was no choice. I thought let the tomatoes die along with the whitefly. I made a fire, looked from the street: the glass (the greenhouse was made of window frames) was all white - the whitefly flew over them, and in the morning ... again moved to the tomatoes.

I had to make a bonfire again in the evening, but before that I had smeared the glass with liquid petroleum jelly (probably, it’s possible with used oil). In the morning all the glasses were white, as if they had been sprinkled with decoy.

This was to be seen: the windows were completely white, as if someone had brought a bag of white butterflies and shook them out in the greenhouse. Over the years I have never seen anything like this in my life. Tomatoes smoked tobacco smoke calmly, and I sprayed the fruits with water, and they again became clean.

Unusual but effective remedy

I am saved from whiteflies so. I get up at the end of the greenhouse and shake the bushes of tomatoes, and my husband sits on the threshold with a blowtorch. Night. An alarmed whitefly flies onto a bright lamp torch and burns out.

Important!
Very comfortably! This is done with closed windows, and without "chemistry". After a day or two, we repeat the procedure, since the whitefly managed to lay eggs, in addition, carbon dioxide serves as a good pollinator, especially for cucumbers.

That's all.

How to deal with whiteflies in a greenhouse: an overview of all known ways to get rid of a parasite

Indoor pests are not so rare. But one small insect, no more than 2 mm in size, which quickly produces whole colonies on the inner sheets of tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and peppers, and quickly devours everything, especially annoys summer residents.

And getting rid of her is another task. Common situation? So let's figure out how to deal with whiteflies in the greenhouse so as not to damage the crop and get rid of the problem forever. We can console you right away - there is a way out!

Aphid or is it a whitefly?

First of all, learn how to identify the first signs of a whitefly in a greenhouse:

  • In different places of plants stickiness is felt.
  • Leaves are deformed, twisted and fade.
  • On the inside of the leaves you see larvae with a wax coating.
  • Some leaf plates of vegetable crops are covered with yellow spots, but the borders are fuzzy.

And finally, just touch the infected bush - a whole flock of small white flies immediately rose and flew to another bush? These are definitely whiteflies. And, if you do not disdain, take a closer look at one of them - does it look like the photos below?

Let's just say: this is a serious threat to your future greenhouse harvest. And the strength of these parasites is that there are many of them - these are hundreds and thousands of small pests that literally draw all the juices from the leaves and stems. If you do nothing, then in a couple of days you will lose all your work.

Attention!
Please note that if black plaque is also noticeable on the sticky secretions of whiteflies, then the plants are already infected with an additional sooty fungus. Such bushes - only tear and urgently burn. Unfortunately.

What harm does this insect do?

Another unpleasant moment that whiteflies carry in themselves is that they consume liquids from plants in excess, and therefore emit liquid from themselves, which is especially beneficial for the development of all kinds of fungi. And what especially bothers you is that the whitefly also lays testicles on the lower side of the leaves.

Life cycle of a pest - take it into service

Why, it would seem, to an ordinary summer resident to know how whiteflies multiply and develop? After all, we are not biologists! But it is precisely this knowledge that will help to effectively deal with this scourge: the problem is that many are trying to destroy adult individuals, while many larvae have already been left. Or vice versa. So, let's take a closer look at it.

Whitefly is very similar in appearance to aphids, but only white. She settles in large groups on leaves or young shoots of plants, and lays eggs in the same place. Larvae appear quickly and independently seek food for themselves. This is precisely the moment to be missed: as soon as the larvae stop eating, they can no longer be killed by any insecticides - their dense wax coating is already enveloping their bodies.

In a word, the cocoon of this adversity is impenetrable, and if an adult appears from the pupa, the crop will disappear, because the body of the young whitefly is also covered with this wax. Then the new generation will migrate to neighboring plants and repeat its entire life cycle, while it is not difficult to guess what remains of the last bush.

Overview of Whitefly Control Methods

So, today there are such types of struggle with the greenhouse whitefly:

Option # 1 - mechanical methods

These are the most harmless measures. Just take and collect the insects by hand, knock them with water from the irrigation hoses and wipe the stems and leaves with a soap solution. The latter, by the way, will also be washed off of honey dew.

Advice!
But remember - you can’t catch all the insects, and the hit wet moths still crawl to their feeding anyway. Although the harvest, I must say, for some time it will become easier, of course. Another modern method is yellow or bright blue sticky traps.

On them, by the way, you will immediately see how much this muck is already in the greenhouse. Why such a color? It is the most attractive to pests. You can also hang a regular ribbon for flies - in case of emergency. But it’s better, of course, to make a quality trap:

  • Step 1. Prepare petroleum jelly, thick paper, rosin and castor oil. Mix.
  • Step 2. In a water bath we heat rosin and add honey, petroleum jelly and castor oil in equal parts.
  • Step 3. The resulting mixture is cooled and applied to a paper base.
  • Step 4. We hang ready-made ribbons throughout the greenhouse.

Ideally, if you take solid plywood for the base and paint it blue or yellow. Here it is and cover with a sticky adhesive. Have many whiteflies arrived? Wash off with soap and apply again. Everything is simple!

Option # 2 - biological methods

The biological method is also interesting: we will use beneficial insects. For example, lacewings and ladybugs can quickly destroy whiteflies. Another way is to make a special herbal infusion.

Recipe number 1:

  • Grind the head of garlic and fill the floor with a liter of water.
  • Let us brew for about a week.
  • We dilute the finished product: 5 g per 1 liter of water.
  • We spray all the plants in the greenhouse.

Recipe number 2:

  • We grind 40 g of dandelion rhizomes and 40 g of leaves of the same plant and fill it with 1 liter of water.
  • Let us brew for a few days.
  • We filter and spray the resulting solution with all the affected plants.
  • After two weeks, repeat the treatment.

Recipe number 3:

  • Pour 80 g of chopped yarrow leaves with one liter of water.
  • We insist for two days.
  • We filter and with the help of a spray we apply vegetable crops occupied by whiteflies.

Another biological control method is to grow parasites for whiteflies. This is done like this: we get a test tube with enkarsia and hang its contents throughout the greenhouse in small paper bags or plastic cups.

The distance between the points - from 3 meters, in the end should be about 15-20 individuals for each square meter of the greenhouse. The search ability of this small insect is excellent - it will find a whitefly even at a distance of 20 meters!

The parasite will lay the egg directly in the heat of the larva, and it will acquire a black color over time. A new insect - Inc ar im. Just do not treat the greenhouse with chemicals before this. Interestingly, sometimes it’s enough to plant a decorative pimju in the corner of the greenhouse - and the whitefly also escapes!

Option # 3 - chemical methods

Of course, chemicals are not the best option for a greenhouse. But if it’s really bad, you have to use insecticides. Take special remedies for sucking pests: Actellik, Pyrmetrin, Malathion, Aktaru, Neudosan or Ziermetrin. And so that the drugs stick better to the plants, add a little laundry soap to them, after rubbing it on a grater.

Important!
Especially effective for the greenhouse is the drug Biotlin - a systemic poison from which the whitefly dies instantly.Good reviews in terms of combating this scourge also about KRA DEO SUPER - this is a special aerosol that needs to be sprayed all over the night.

But keep in mind that insecticides will be effective only when the insects themselves are in the imago or larval stage. You will be late - chemicals will be useless. The most extreme case, if absolutely nothing helps from the whitefly - after harvesting, remove all the tops, disinfect the soil and set fire to several sulfur blocks for the night. After that, remove the entire topsoil - this is where the larvae hide. Usually, after this, the whitefly disappears forever.

How to make an effective trap?

You can make such a cunning trap for whiteflies - it is unexpectedly very effective:

  • Step 1. Pieces of plastic are painted in orange-yellow color.
  • Step 2. Next, cover them with entomological glue.
  • Step 3. We fix the backlight - directly on the plastic, which we hang at the level of the tops of the plants.

In literally an hour, up to 80% of all whiteflies will adhere there. And put a second trap for the night:

  • Step 1. In the box we drill holes at the level of the bulb - and we put it inside the box.
  • Step 2. We also paint the light bulb in orange-yellow color.
  • Step 3. Under the light bulb, at the bottom of the box, put a container of water.

The principle of operation of the trap is as follows: whiteflies tend to this light at night, penetrate into the box, fly, burn on a light bulb and fall into a container of water. They don’t know how to swim.

How to block the "return path" to the pest?

Attention!
What to do after the pest is destroyed? Did he leave his "spies" in the closed ground?

Your fears are not unfounded - and then strictly follow these rules:

  • First: this is a deep digging of the entire greenhouse land - in the fall. If insects burrow into the soil - they will appear on the surface, and then the cold will finish them off.
  • Second: After harvesting, always remove and incinerate all plant debris.
  • Third: never place a composter directly in the greenhouse - all pests from the garden can spawn from it.

But how to make sure that this misfortune never appears in the greenhouse at all? What preventative measures exist?

  • Rule 1. For the winter, try to remove the cover from the greenhouse or remove at least the top.
  • Rule 2. If the coating has not been removed, be sure to carry out spring disinfection of polycarbonate or glass, and treat the frame with bleach.
  • Rule 3. Water the soil before planting with a solution of iron or copper sulfate.

So, are you ready to fight for sweat and blood earned harvest? Believe and do not despair - you will succeed!

How to deal with whiteflies in the garden

There are chemical methods to eliminate whiteflies. The purchase of substances that poison the juice of cabbage and thereby kill all adult butterflies and larvae may be relevant. But, pest eggs will remain alive, and offspring will reappear. Poisoning is repeated after a couple of weeks to kill the aphid again and prevent it from laying eggs.

But, understand that the poisoned juice of vegetables will be harmful not only for insects. Poisons can also affect human health. They won’t kill, but there will be unpleasant consequences. You can’t eat processed cabbage for another couple of months. It is necessary that the breakdown substances of the drugs come out of plants. Cabbage can not be taken either in a salad, or for smoothies, or for preparing hot dishes.

An interesting method of combating winged parasites is traps and mimics. The trap is made of thick cardboard or plastic. The outer part of the material is abundantly greased with glue that does not smell and does not dry. The bright orange or yellow color of the trap attracts insects, like a burning light bulb.

As a result, whiteflies, aphids, mosquitoes, spider mites and other pests sit on the glue. Your task is to remove crowded traps in time. Similar traps are sold in stores. Their price range depends on the prestige of the manufacturer and the margin of the store itself.

You can make a similar trap for insects at home. You will need cardboard, which you will paint with bright paint. After the material has dried, it is liberally lubricated with a mixture of honey, castor oil, rosin and vasilin. Set traps throughout the greenhouse at the same distance from each other. Thus, you can catch all the pests that are in the greenhouse.

Fumigators as a means of combating whitefly

Whiteflies can be etched with conventional fumigators against mosquitoes or flies. They are placed throughout the greenhouse at the same distance in relation to each other.

Advice!
When fumigators work, neither people nor animals can be in the greenhouse, because you can get poisoning of the respiratory tract. At the same moment, the whitefly and its offspring die from this substance. Pest must be treated several times with an interval of 7 days.

Only a larva and an adult die from the fugimator; poison does not affect eggs. Therefore, the greenhouse is treated again after the larvae hatch again.

Nets from whiteflies, aphids, flies and other pests

Phyto-protective nets - the ability to eliminate the root cause of plant infection, and not fight its consequences. This technique works better than pest control drugs. The interest is that you put the net once, and you no longer have to spend time on processing plants and money on chemicals.

Phyto-protective net or its analogues exclude the processing of vegetables with chemicals. You grow products that are not afraid to eat yourself and feed them your children. The topic of the influence of pesticides on the human body and the pollution of the earth by the products of their decay has been raised repeatedly.

If you cannot get rid of the use of chemistry on the scale of the country's activity, then in the household you have the opportunity to choose. Using a grid, you solve the problem with many pests of vegetables in one step. Different types of nets are on sale, you can buy the NetHouse option - an inexpensive and high-quality mesh for creating greenhouses and sheltering open beds with vegetables. You can see other options.

When choosing a material, focus on the quality of the material and its strength, price should become a secondary factor. Through the phytoset, insects cannot get to the vegetables. At that moment, the sun and fresh air calmly penetrate inside. Adequate air circulation is ensured, and if you take care of proper care of seedlings, you will get a rich harvest.

Important!
Whiteflies, mining flies, aphids and other pests feed on plant juices; they can eat fruits and shoots of seedlings. In addition, they carry spores of fungi, which then become the cause of other plant diseases. If we talk about cabbage, it is easier to get rid of the whitefly right away than to observe how the crop dies.

The phytoset can stand, both in the greenhouse, and cover the whole area with vegetables. In arched-type greenhouses, a mesh with polyethylene is combined. Thus, insect protection and a normal temperature in the room are ensured.

How to deal with whitefly folk methods

In addition to chemicals and mesh structures, pest control can be used folk remedies. Preparations made from natural raw materials do not penetrate deep into the plant, but act locally. Thus, you kill insects, but vegetables can be safely served.

In this case, the soil does not accumulate the decay products of the drug, as is the case with chemical agents. So, how to treat cabbage from whiteflies?

We wipe the plants with water

Whitefly larvae become adults quite quickly. At temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius and sufficient humidity, they grow in 7 days. It’s not enough just to poison adult butterflies, you need to try to get rid of the larvae.

To do this, wipe the leaves of plants with a damp sponge, which is periodically dipped in a solution of water and soap. Larvae are washed off difficultly, but try to remove all insects that can be reached. This processing method is suitable for indoor flowers and young seedlings of cabbage.

But, it is better to use it on a small plot or in a private household. When it comes to large-scale production and an area of several hectares, water treatment will be hard work and ineffective.

Change the temperature

If we talk about the greenhouse, then the whitefly does not survive here at a temperature lower than 10 degrees heat. Adult butterflies die, and the larvae slow their growth. This method can also be used to exterminate pests.

Attention!
It is good to keep the ground in a greenhouse at a temperature of -5 to -15 degrees Celsius, so that all insect eggs die. Do this after harvesting and cleaning the greenhouse from waste. When the seedlings develop in full swing, it is not recommended to change the temperature regime.

We prepare a biologically active solution for spraying plants. These substances can be used and for watering plants the effect of this will not become less.

A mixture of soap and water

We take 1 part of laundry soap and 6 parts of water. So that the soap dissolves quickly it can be cut on a coarse grater for vegetables. Shake the mixture well and apply to all green parts of the plants.

The earth around each bush is also cultivated, but try to ensure that the composition does not fall deep into the ground. A plant will not like this dietary supplement. Usually one procedure is to kill all insects and their offspring. If after treatment there are still living individuals, repeat the procedure after 7 days.

Garlic tincture

Plants are sprayed with this agent. It acts locally, does not poison the juice of vegetables and is detrimental to whiteflies. Preparing the tincture is simple: chop two large cloves of garlic and pour in 1 liter of water. The mixture is kept in a dark place for a whole day.

Next, pour the solution into the spray bottle and spray your vegetables or indoor plants. A similar method can be processed in a small area. In the greenhouse, a similar method will have to work for a long time.

Yarrow tincture

Take 90 grams of the plant and fill it with 1 liter of water. Infuse the mixture for two days, then filter the solution and sprinkle the vegetables with it. The procedure must be repeated 3 times with an interval of 7 days. The whitefly should disappear completely.

Tobacco tincture

Take 1 pack of cigarettes without a Prima filter, pour tobacco into a container and fill it with water. Infuse the mixture in a dark place for 5 days. Then filter and pour into the spray bottle.

Advice!
Spray crops will have to be every 3 days until the whitefly completely disappears.

Dandelion tincture

To prepare the mixture, you need to take 40 grams of leaves and 40 grams of the roots of the plant, grind and pour a liter of water. Tincture should stand in a dark place for 4 days. Next, the tincture is filtered and treated with plants. Usually 2 times is enough to completely get rid of insects.

Whitefly on the open ground - control methods

The easiest way to remove the whitefly is to wash it off with water or a feeding solution. After this, it should be shallow - 2 cm, to loosen the soil.

Fighting at Home Flowers

Most often, whiteflies can be found on tomatoes. It affects not only the leaves of the plant, but also its fruits, which inside turn white. If there is a butterfly, and larvae on tomatoes are not yet visible, then serious damage can still be avoided by applying preventive measures.

Plants need to be treated several times with a soapy solution and an insecticide. Fighting whiteflies on tomatoes is also good with products that contain feverfew or pyrimiphosmetil. On cucumbers (in the photo) and zucchini there will be less whiteflies if every 10 days they are sprayed with the product Bud - 10 grams per 10 liters of water. Good from this scourge and help such modern drugs as:

  1. Spark - 1 pc per 10 l of water;
  2. Citcor - 1.5 ml per 10 liters of water.

Such measures should be applied regularly, until complete destruction. The consumption of drugs will be 10 liters per 100 m2 of the garden.Spraying beds from whiteflies must be carried out on a dry and windless day. If you spray tomatoes, it is advisable to do this later in the evening, as after the procedure, burns can occur on the tomatoes.

Important!
Do not use the same drug many times to control pests. They develop immunity, and such a struggle will not bring results. The use of too aggressive drugs is not recommended.

Poisonous chemical elements accumulate in the soil, and it is difficult to remove them later. Starting the fight against insects, take into account their life cycle and use appropriate preparations for it. Have a good harvest.

  1. I read somewhere that pests can start if you do not update the soil. It is necessary to periodically import new, fresh soil and cultivate it. Then, after preparing the mail during planting, strengthen the plants themselves. I have never encountered a whitefly, but we had a lot of aphids last summer. But after reading the article, she doubted whether the aphid was ordinary or all the same whitefly.
